The Find: Something I’ve Never Seen Before

Nordstrom is having a site-wide sale. 25% off regular and sale-priced items with some limited exclusions. I have never seen a site-wide sale at Nordstrom, ever.
This pale grey Rebecca Taylor Suit Blazer ($296) and Trouser ($206) caught my eye. The entire Tailored by Rebecca Taylor line does a fantastic job of being both professional and pretty.
I’ve also been looking at this deep teal Suistudio blazer and pants. The teal is rich and vibrant. I would also wear the pants with a black sheer blouse and blazer.
If you’re in the market for new suit, Nordstrom has a lot of lovely options on discount, even from brands that rarely have sales.

Any thoughts on ordering things online right now? I want to support stores (especially local ones) but feel conflicted about causing additional work for USPS/UPS/FedEx employees for trivial things like clothes. Other perspectives or insights are welcomed!
Same. Feeling a bit of a moral conundrum, shopping online retailers and home delivery grocery services. On the one hand, it keeps people employed; on the other it’s a scary time and I can’t imagine that everyone feels good about going in to pack up these boxes on the assembly line. I just don’t know.
For restaurants, some people are ordering takeout online and then picking up in person. Others are buying gift cards & vouchers to spend later on, so that they can still support neighborhood small businesses.
I would continue to purchase as you normally would, with the understanding that delivery times maybe delayed. I can’t speak to what conditions in warehousing/distribution centers maybe like, but I do work in the transportation industry. We are facing a lot of uncertainty right now, and the work we do can’t be done from home. All the major carriers will broker their overage to smaller carriers, which may keep many independent contractors (who will likely not qualify for unemployment) working.
Just like we all need grocery stores to stay open, we need the infrastructure that supports our supply chain to continue, so if your concern is overwhelming UPS/FEDEX, please do not hesitate. I do understand that there are other things to be weighed as well during this time, and to take into account when making purchases 🙂
I’m still ordering. Maybe not as I normally would, but making purchases that I would have made anyway within reason. I just hose them down with lysol before I bring them in my house.
My UPS guy delivered a TV to us today. I ordered it weeks ago, but didn’t cancel because we’re going to be watching more TV than ever. He had to know I was home so he could leave it, so we socially safe distance chatted. He thanked me for ordering things. He said they were concerned routes might be combined and drivers might be furloughed if people stop ordering completely.
We need to keep this economy going. I work in the food industry, and trust me, as long as it’s safe, we want to work.
Anna, can you talk a little about some of the precautions restaurants offering take out are doing? Ours are closed here, do you happen to know if the Health Dept’s have any guidance? We’d like to order here and there to help out our favorite spots, but we’re a bit nervous.
There aren’t specific directives that I know of. I believe most places are just following guidance from the CDC and local health departments. Where I work (a bakery), all high-traffic surfaces(door handles, counters, etc) are being sanitized every 30 mins. Baristas are using hand sanitizers immediately after handling anything from a customer (some places are only doing touchless payment or no cash, and we’re definitely encouraging it but they do occasionally touch a card). We also aren’t accepting outside drink containers or allowed to bring our own containers for water, etc. As far as actual food and beverages, even before COVID-19, per usual health code, any ready to eat food has to be handled with gloves unless your business gets a variance, but we’re basically washing hands any time we have a spare second. It’s also part of our usual routine to sanitize our work surfaces and equipment multiple times a day, so for that, we’re just being extra thorough. Most places have also stressed that any employee who seems sick will be sent home.
Most cities make restaurant health department scores available online, so you can see what your favorite restaurants have been dinged for in the past. If they’ve generally been pretty diligent before this, then I’d feel comfortable eating there now, because they’re probably going above and beyond to keep things clean.

I invested in things to make my work-from-home life easier:
-new girlfriend collective 7/8 leggings in a fun color (omg if you haven’t worn these, they are the BEST workout leggings and they’re made from recycled water bottles)
-voluspa 3-wick candle
-aesop face masque because SKINCARE and not makeup will be my focus for the next few weeks
as for those worried about shipping, many stores offer pick-up if there’s one close to you. a pal of mine in seattle ordered online and did the curbside pick-up option.
Reminder that Nordstrom is continuing to pay their employees during this time so it’s a great place to support. I know we’re all thinking small business – which is important! – but it’s also good to support bigger companies that are making payroll promises.
