Ask the Editor: Vol. VI, No. Four

Mar 3, 2026

It’s the last week of the Washington legislative session.

The final days of a session are always challenging, but in Washington, end-of-session often means being at the office from 8:00AM until after midnight. Even as a seasoned legislative aide, this schedule is a new experience for me. Never in my career have I been in a situation where one party has full dominance over the chamber, but moves through each legislative day seemingly without a clear path for what comes next.

Is it chaos? Is it a game of pretend? Some people say it’s a lack of control over the chamber, some say it’s a mind game. Whatever it is, the impact on the staff is negative.

Last night, for example, the Majority announced shortly after 10:00PM that it intended to vote on a healthcare bill, but that the 40+ amendments submitted to the bill would all need to be redrafted to a newly released version of the bill received just minutes prior. So the plan was to wait for hours as the non-partisan staffer responsible for that legislation redrafted dozens of amendments, and then, begin the multi-hour process of hearing the bill, debating the amendments, and voting on each one individually.

Keep in mind, multiple legislators had already left the building for the night — some unavailable due to illness and emergency — others just deciding that they’d had enough.

Ultimately, after an hour-long stress scramble in which we watched one of our colleagues experience the seven stages of grief simultaneously, this ill-conceived plan was abandoned and we were dismissed shortly after midnight. Thus, here I am, at 2:00AM, caffeinated, underfed, and stressed out, writing a blog post instead of sleeping. But don’t worry, I have six whole hours until I have to be back at work. So let’s take a break and answer some mailbag questions.

Abra,

Can you help me find some shirt dresses for work?  My office went business casual in January and with spring coming, I think that’s going to be my look.  Price point is variable, but nothing over $250.

TY! Faye

I have been mesmerized by this H&M shirtdress for weeks.  I love the trim on the sleeves and the classic shape.  It’s pretty enough for a special occasion but breathes some life into every day.

If you like a fuller skirt, this Marine Layer dress and this Land’s End dress (also in plus) both have fitted waists and a-line skirts.  You also can’t go wrong with Ralph Lauren or Talbot’s.  Frankly, this is also a style that’s great to find a rental.  RTR has some great business casual and casual styles.

DM: Where are your shoes from?

Earlier today I posted a photo of my outfit to Instagram.  It is my 52nd day wearing a suit, and I am just over it.  But so many of you messaged to ask about my shoes, that I thought I would share them here.

I get so many compliments every time I wear these patent leather tortoise kitten heels from Stuart Weitzman (also on Zappos).  They’re reasonably comfortable.  They’re easy to wear.  They go with almost anything.  And while they are spendy, considering cost per wear and the fact that they’re such a crowd pleaser, I think they’re worth it.

Hello,

My perimenopausal hair is a nightmare.  It’s dry.  It’s frizzy.  I’ve tried every conditioner and shampoo.  I’ve cut it.  I’ve colored it.  Nothing helps.  Please help.

– Pippa

Isn’t middle age fun?  I love it.  But if you’ve tried changing your in-shower routine, maybe you need to try a pre-shower routine.  Applying Olaplex Bond Repair products before you shampoo can make a big difference.  I comb a sizable amount of their Rich Hydration Mask through my hair, apply a shower cap and then clean my house.  If I don’t have time for that, I use their three-minute Complete Repair treatment while I shave my legs.

DM: Can you help me find blue wedding shoes that are flats?

I found two pair worth a look: These sheer Ted Baker flats with a floral motif, and these adorable C. Paravano flats with little bows.

Wedding shoe tip?  Wear them a lot before the day of to break them in.  Use chafe stick or spray on the day to prevent blisters.

Abra,

I am taking my 2-year-old to Disney with my husband.  What do I wear to the park?  What do I wear to the pool?

Anon

I will let people who have been to Disney answer the park-attire question, as I have not been.  But I will answer the pool question.  Nothing makes life easier as a Mom at the pool than a great cover up.  I love this one from Anthropologie with its pretty fringe and 70s vibes.  Old Navy has a similar look for less.  I also bought this collared Vix cover up to wear on vacation, for an easy transition to lunch or brunch.

Also, cool sunglasses are always a boost to your outfit.  Varley has some modern, fashion forward styles.  Quay sunglasses are probably my favorite brand, and they run 2 for 1 sales pretty frequently.

Abra:

I HAVE A JOB THAT INVOLVES FREQUENT AND VERY LONG FLIGHTS (THINK 20+ HOURS OF TRAVEL EACH WAY – I was on 10 flights alone in November) I’m LOOKING FOR SOME TRAVEL CLOTHES THAT ARE REALLY, REALLY COMFORTABLE that I can buy a couple sets in and call it a day. I HAD SOME SWEATPANTS/SHIRT SETa FROM LILLY PULITZER, BUT IVE CHANGED SIZES AND THEY NO LONGER SELL THEM. Petite fit in the bottom would be ideal, and jogger style is a requirement. Any suggestions would be amazing, as I’ve struggled to find soft, comfy sets. ThanK you for being such a great blog, you are the only blog i still follow.

Ashley

The best sets come from two places: Spanx and Varley.  They are worth the money, and mine have worn like iron just washing on cold and cool drying in a mesh bag.  But if you need petite or tall sizes, I recommend Old Navy.  This Old Navy set looks just like my ivory marl Varley set.

I’m a mom of 3 (my youngest is 16), and I’ve been to Disney World a few times and on Disney Cruises 3 times. Abra might not like my anti-fashion advice here, lol, but it doesn’t matter too much what you wear. I would suggest shorts or an athletic skort at the parks. (Check out Merrick’s Art or Anna Daly for very comfy and reasonable “Mom” things to wear and take to Disney.) On my last Disney Cruise, I took a similar version of this vineyard vines cover-up, and and I loved it. https://www.vineyardvines.com/product/womens-cover-ups/harbor-shirt-cover-up/2C001259.html
It’s pricey, and I found it at an outlet store for $30, but I would totally pay full price for it now. There are several styles of the Harbor coverup, so search around. It drives quick and felt modest around my kids and entire family. Also, the most important things are what you pack for your kid. Take a small, but comfy stroller, and plan out your naps. Everyone needs a hat, including your kid…we did bucket hats when the kids were little. Just enjoy! Most people aren’t trying too hard to be fashionable there!

    To Ashley:

My daughter has both the Bounce Fleece from Old Navy and the All in Motion airy sleek fleece from Target. Both are Spanx knockoffs. The All in Motion airy sleek washes so incredibly well, I bought it for myself. If you follow the wash instructions and wash separately inside out, it doesn’t pill at all! I can’t say the same for the Old Navy Bounce fleece, which I have carefully washed, and it looks horrible. No petites right now, in the Airy Sleek, but sometimes they do, so watch for them. But Old Navy Dynamic fleece, while not as soft to the touch, washes really well and comes in matching pieces, including petite joggers.

Sorry that was longer than a Washington legislative session day! It’s been one of those kind of days for me as well…

    • Cait says:

Thank you for the washing experience info!
I bought the Spanx Air Essentials crewneck on a major Black Friday Sale for ~$30 and it honestly wasn’t even worth that. My washer and dryer aren’t typically rough on clothes, and the washing instructions clearly state that machine washing and tumble drying are acceptable (inside out, cold wash, gentle cycle, low tumble). But after washing 3 times, my $100 (had I paid full price) sweatshirt is so pilled that it’s no longer suitable to leave the house. I have $10 Gildan sweats that look better than this now.
Going to go with the dupes from now on, and will give the Dynamic Fleece a try!

Check out Lively for great jogger sets! I wear mine on the plane a ton and they are comfy and you can still look somewhat put together. I also like COMFRT, which is more casual-looking but man, I live in their waffle knit loungewear.

  3. Katie says:

Re: Disney outfits – I would go for an outfit that you’ll be comfy in, that photographs nicely and that makes you happy. No one else will care what you’re wearing! I wouldn’t do a dress or a jumpsuit, but shorts, leggings, jeans, joggers, linen pants etc would all be totally normal things to wear.

  4. Sarah says:

Abra, reading your session experience the last few months has reignited my PTSD from my decade in the Legislature. I still work in a chaotic executive branch office but the vibe is different. Sending you strength for these last days!

  5. Alicia says:

I have two tips. First K18 hair mask has really transformed my 13 year old’s frizzy hair. It’s pricey but just bought it again when it ran out. Second, for petite sets (although not necessarily jogger style more wide leg) look at JCrew factory and aerie. I’ve been living in my aerie set on weekends.

    • Belle says:

Look for the value size. It’s a good deal. sometimes they have it at Costco or at the Sephora 20% off sale.

  6. Nancy M says:

just here to say: omgggg that sounds so intense, and unreasonable, and I hope you can rest very very soon.

  7. Jody says:

FYI, I bought the old navy dupe set for the Varley/ Spanx and it did not hold up beyond a month. Snags and piling from normal wear. Not worth it.

  8. Sarah Bruns says:

Petite-Friendly and Jogger and Sets? Athleta is basically the main answer.

  9. strin012 says:

I have really loved the T by Talbots athleisure! Everything has held up nicely through warm water washes (an unfortunate necessity for me) and hanging to dry. I’m pretty sure they have petite sizes, too!

  10. Sara says:

I’m petite (5’0) and find that some of the Varley pants/joggers work; the tops are petite-friendly enough too but I size down.

  11. Linda says:

Hi Abra, Do you apply the olaplex bond repair on wet or dry hair? I have it but the instructions say to apply on wet hair, which you basically have to do in the shower and then your waiting around soaked for it to do it’s thing.
Peri menopausal hair sucks, mine is shedding so much and feels thinner

Aldi of all places has a shirt dress this week that looks a lot like the Marine Layer style. Comes in three colors.https://www.aldi.us/product/serra-ladies-pleated-front-woven-dress-stripe-s-0000000000078975

  13. Jill says:

I have a shirt dress from Target that I love but have barely worn because it requires a ton of ironing or steaming, and I’m reluctant to do. So much fabric! So perhaps something to keep in mind. I will next time. 🙂

  14. Nicole says:

Disney parent here. I prefer to wear bottoms with zippered pockets for my phone and wallet. even if you have a stroller you’ll need to leave it and bags at line/restaurant entrances so I prefer to have my phone and wallet with me at all times. Depending on the weather I’ll wear joggers or athletic shorts or skort. I love Fabletics brand. Also, FL is humid 24/7 so wick away fabric is key for me.

  15. Tammy says:

Hi – what is your experience with Varley sizing? I just bought my first piece – The Davidson Sweatshirt – and it seemed really short (I have a long torso). What pieces have worked for you?

    • Belle says:

Some of the quarter zips are a bit short for me as well. I tend to stick to the longer crewnecks and the longer zip ups. For sizing, I find things run a little big.
