The Range: Summer Pants

Jun 10, 2025

It’s June. It’s 88-degrees outside. The sun is blasting. And yet, despite the weather, here I am talking about pants. Why? Because it’s so called in my home office that I could age meat in here. I’m five-degrees away from wearing fingertip gloves and a parka. So pants, as impractical as they may sound in theory, are absolutely necessary in practice.

But what pants can be worn in a chilly office and outside on a lunchtime walk or on a coffee run without melting your legs like a candle? Let’s go shopping.

I own these Old Navy gauze pants in two colors.  They’re so easy and light.  They are basically my summer leggings.  These come in tall, petite and run up to 4X.  They will sell out in black, and likely other shades as well, so don’t sleep on these.  I like them with a matching gauze top, and Old Navy has several styles.

Lululemon has these beachy, striped linen pants on offer.  I saw these in store and loved them.  They are selling out in the 31″ length.  I need the 25″ length, so these work great for me.

Chinos are a tough wear for many of us in law/politics.  Too many intern bros in khakis to feel like this style can be embraced.  But I bought these Boden pants for casual work travel.  They’re slimmer fitting and a little stretchy without losing their shape.  So if you like a chino, these are great.  Also in petite, run up to size 20.

Love the look of jeans but not in the summer heat?  I bought a pair of chambray pants, and they are the perfect thing from when you want a really light, relaxed jean.  These ones from LL Bean and these from J.Crew Factory are both great.  Mine are from Chico’s.

Need a pair of relaxed pants that can go to a “real” office?  These Faherty pants have a more tailored look and a button waistband, giving them a more structured appearance.  They are definitely office ready with a button up shirt and a simple cardigan, or with a structured blouse and a flat shoe.

I’m really happy to see this list and I would love recommendations for styling these so they don’t feel like pajamas!

I got this pair from Madewell last year and it’s a perfect pant to dress up or down. Not many sizes left, but a good sale price! https://www.madewell.com/p/womens/sale/pants-shorts/mid-rise-straight-pants-in-plaid-linen-blend/NQ422/?ccode=WR1035

You (your mom?) sold me on the Athleta Endless pant. I now have them in navy and the greenish slate and am now in midweek-laundry-so-I-can-rewear mode. Athletic pants that my more stylish and formal colleagues compliment me on? Incredible.

I ordered the Dulwich linen pants in Gingerbread from Boden (maybe a rec from here? I don’t remember!) and finally wore them yesterday – they were great! Love that they’re fitted in front but have the elastic waistband in the back. They felt substantial, didn’t wrinkle too terribly for linen, and looked so put together. Just ordered a different linen pant in white from Boden – hoping they’re opaque!

I second this! I own the Athleta Retreat linen pants in wide leg in three colors. They are a summer staple.
