In February, my family has had exactly six days when no one was sick. Six out of 26 is not the number we’re looking for.
Monday night, Sloane spiked a 104-degree fever, vomited, and cried uncontrollably. We alternated Motrin and Tylenol for a few hours, and she cooled off and slept most of the night. Then, last night, we ended up with an 11PM wakeup, a 1AM wakeup, followed by a disco bath, and a fitful night of sleep for everyone.
So I am once again popping Tamiflu like Tic-Tacs, chewing on Zicam gummies, and praying for health. This is life with a toddler. So we postponed potty training until she’s out of the woods, and more compliant. Defiance, thy name is sick toddler.
Also, thanks to a new round of illness, I am once again behind at work, trying to dig out. I’m getting callouses from the shovel that I never seem able to put down. But it’s a season, and it will pass.
Speaking of work, it dawned on me that I don’t think I ever announced my “big news.” Earlier this year, I made partner at my firm. I know it’s a big accomplishment. I know I should be proud. But when everything feels so heavy, it’s tough to summon the joy. Plus, it hasn’t really sunk in yet. Maybe it will when I have to give a speech at my firm’s shareholder dinner in March.
Which leads me to my quest for something to wear to said dinner. A suit feels to formal. So I’m looking for a fitted dress. If any of my professional clothing fit right now, I could just wear an old favorite. Sadly, I’ve been sitting in an office chair since August of 2023 and my body has taken the shape of it.
I’m looking for something like Black Halo’s Jackie dress. Currently, the top contender is this green sheath. This Karen Millen dress also caught my eye. On the more affordable side, I may just buy this Donna Karan belted sheath to wear to work. It’s very slimming thanks to the belt.
Speaking of looking your best. . . if you’re over 35, you need this Dior Glow Star Filter. It makes your skin look effortlessly dewy and bright. I wear it almost daily. It’s like performance enhancing drugs for your makeup.
But while my head may be thinking about looking my best on my work trip next month, my body is firmly planted in Toddler Illness Land. So the only nice thing I’m wearing here are my super comfortable Spanx Air Essential sweatshirts. (I just pair them with black leggings from Old Navy, because I don’t need to blow the bank on weekend wear.) The turtleneck tunic is my favorite piece.
So here’s hoping we come out of this round of illness unscathed. I can’t wait for spring. Bring on the sunshine (and the outdoor play, as opposed to germy indoor spaces).
Also, if you’ve been doomscrolling and want to remain in the know about the government without feeling like your head might pop open if you hear one more upsetting thing: I follow @mosheh for news and @amandasmildtakes for commentary. Amanda is anti-Trump, but in a way that amuses instead of angers. So for those of us who don’t want our government turned over to an unelected billionaire oligarch with 13 children, who dresses like an extra in a John Wick movie, it’s a nice break.
I hope you have a lovely week. I’ll pop over between doses of Theraflu.
xo, Abra

Congrats on making partner! I hope when the fog of Toddler Germs lifts, you are able to soak in the pride of this accomplishment. Also, if you have not tried the Throat Spray from Beekeepers Naturals has been great at helping me keep the germs at bay.
Huge accomplishment! Hope you’re in a position to recognize it with a healthy household soon.
Wow, partner is huge! Congratulations! And celebrate that, you worked hard for it!
WHOA, congratulations on making partner! That is an amazing milestone and I hope that you’re able to come up for air and feel the joy and pride you deserve.
I simultaneously relate, though. No sick toddler, but other heavy things + *gestures at the state of the country* mean I’m also feeling a little deflated about my recent professional accomplishments.
Also, adore the green dress and the Donna Karan sheath. I love the portrait neckline on the other, but not sold on the peplum.
Congratulations on making partner while parenting and maintaining a blog too! Wow. Very very impressive, and we hope you guys are healthy enough soon to have a true celebration.
Congratulations! That’s an amazing accomplishment!!
I really appreciate you “keeping things real” with the life updates and toddler posts. I’m a stay at home mom now with some side hustles but I can definitely relate 🙂
Congratulations! Godspeed to y’all as you push thru the preschool winter germtravaganza.
Congratulations on making partner, that’s amazing!
From one law firm partner to another – Congratulations! It’s a big accomplishment. Enjoy it!!
Woah, congratulations!!!
I am obsessed with all things The Fold, but all of those are gorgeous! Hope you find the perfect one for said occasion. You deserve it 🎉
Congratulations! I hope you find a moment to bask in your well earned achievement.
Congrats on making partner! I’ve been through the germ phase of parenting. It will get better.
Congrats on making partner! When I made partner, my mentor told me “Congratulations, you just won the pie eating contest and the prize is more pie!”
Congratulations! Making partner is a huge accomplishment. I can relate to the weird feeling after; took me like two years to hit my stride and at times was very hard to have gone from a super talented senior associate to a kinda struggling junior partner. But you will get there!
Amazing news. Congratulations on making partner! Hope you can find time to celebrate with your family once everyone is recovered!
Congratulations, Abra!!!!
Congratulations on making partner. That is a huge accomplishment and I’m doing a happy dance in my apartment for you!
CONGRATS!!!! That is huge news! The green is standout and lovely. Thanks for sharing those Instagram reccs, following them asap to get a more muted dose of chaos.
Congrats on making partner! It’s a huge accomplishment. And you did it while parenting a toddler… as a colleague reminded me when I made partner, it wasn’t all that long ago when a working mother just wouldn’t be able to achieve those sorts of professional milestones. Hope you feel up to celebrating soon!
Congrats on partner, and I’m right there with you on the germ front (2yo and 4 yo in my house). I don’t believe in taking vitamins and supplements normally, but there is some scientific evidence behind elderberry and vitamin C taken together specifically for colds (not covid). At least this year, we haven’t landed in the hospital yet (last year was RSV). Good luck and hope you heal soon!

Congratulations! Love the dresses!
Congrats! You should wear the pink suit featured in your previous post!
Congratulations, Abra! Here’s to a healthy household, and oligarchs somehow getting kicked out of the government.
WOOOOO, congratulations!!
That green sheath dress is incredible.
A total placebo, but emergen-c makes gummies. They taste like a truly great candy (the sugar free ones less so, the full-sugar ones are delicious). It makes me feel like I’m doing something to stave off the illness each morning. Good luck.
Congratulations on making partner! Hope you’re able to celebrate soon and really let it sink in. With you in the trenches of toddler sickness.
Congratulations! Have been reading your blog since your early days. So happy to see this!
A huge belated congratulations on making partner! That is a big, big deal. 🙂
Congrats on making partner! You hats huge, especially with all you juggle.
The toddler cootie days are tough. Praying some sunny spring days help blow out all the bad stuff.
Your rec of the Dior Glow Star Filter plus the Dr Jarts have been a winner with me – I’m stashing them everywhere.
CONGRATS ON MAKING PARTNER!!!!
Congratulations on making partner! What a great achievement!
Congratulations on making partner!! That’s a huge accomplishment and we’re all cheering for you!
I’ve been a follower since before your law school days, and this news brings me so much joy! May your household be free of illness soon so you can properly celebrate and bask in your glory.
Congratulations, Abra!
