Two Ways: How to Style Terri’s Pants

Apr 2, 2024

Two weeks ago, I wrote about my Mom’s favorite pants: the Athleta High Rise Endless Pants. They’re an athleisure pant that is easy to wear on the weekends, for WFH, or to a casual office. Some of you asked for a post on styling them, so let’s get to it.

For Work Travel // When I fly for work, I often need to be able to go from the plane to my firm’s office for a few hours in the afternoon.  It’s a situation in which everyone understands I just got off a plane, so as long as I look pulled together, I’ll fit in fine among the button-up shirts and cardigans over blouses most of my colleagues are wearing.

For this look, I chose a cashmere sweater from J.Crew with an interesting texture.  It bridges the gap between business and casual.  Then, I added a drapey cotton trench to pull the look together with the Athleta pants.

Want a jacket that functions more like a blazer?  First, you could try a cropped jacket that you wouldn’t have to take off instead of the trench.  Second, you could wear a cardigan in the same color and texture as the sweater.  If you want something sportier, I like this Pilcro utility jacket from Anthro.

For the plane, I chose these low profile Rothy’s sneakers.  If you prefer something to wear straight to the office, I would try a gray driver.  Another option for the office would be a colored leather flat like these orange ones from Madewell.

I chose gold earrings because I love the way they look with grey.  And I still think the Lo & Sons OG bag is the best for the plane.

For Work From Home // If you work from home or hybrid, get yourself a striped shirt for summer.  It’s such a versatile piece.  It looks great with shorts at the pool.  It looks great with wide leg trousers at work.  It looks great tied over a slip dress for dinner.

This one from Caslon has a navy stripe (also in plus).  I also like this Rag & Bone shirt with a chevron accent on the pocket.  Or go for a breezier style and snag this gauze Caslon option.

Here, I styled them with the Athleta pants and a J.Crew denim jacket.  I own last year’s version of this jacket, and it’s a nice piece.  Doesn’t have any pockets though for reasons surpassing understanding.  So if you need pockets, snag this one from Kut from the Kloth.

For the shoes, I chose these red, double strap sandals.  For a more office-appropriate shoe, I like these combination ballet flats and slingbacks also in red.  It’s a summery alternative to a leather work flat.  They would look great with a white dress.

Lastly, I still love the chiseled look of these silver hoops.  And I’d add a sheer red lip to jazz things up a bit.

I wasn’t convinced about the pants… now I’m certain I need the pants/striped shirt/jean jacket with red accents combo FORTHWITH.

  2. Ellen says:

Do you tuck the striped shirt in? Love those red sandals!

  3. Amanda Peterson says:

For the tops, are you tucking them in? Half tuck? Thank you!

  4. Not Terri yet says:

I am plus size pear and honestly didn’t think the style would look good on me – but my sizes in almost every color are sold out! I feel like that’s a ringing endorsement so I’ll sign up to be notified when the pants come back into stock

  5. Olive says:

What’s the weight of the fabric like for these pants? I feel like they could work for me, but I’ve ordered too many athleisure pants that turned out to be a really thin material that did nothing for my butt. Since I hate ordering and returning, I haven’t pulled the trigger on these.

    • Belle says:

I would not describe it as really thin, but I would not say it is thick either. All of these tech pants tend to be a little thin, but these ones are the thickest I’ve tried.

  6. Anna says:

Thirding the tuck question. I never know what do with shirts when I wear these sort of athleisure pants.
