You Have, You Need: Cashmere Sweater Edition

Oct 5, 2023

A cashmere crewneck is an easy basic that works hard for working women.  But if you have one that’s been sitting in a drawer for awhile keeping your cedar sachets company, let me help you restyle and refresh it.

Cashmere Sweater // This ribbed J.Crew sweater is a fantastic piece that is perfect for fall.  You can dress it up or down.  You can store it and rewear it for seasons to come.  I think the ribbing gives it a more relaxed, but elevated look — ala Jenni Kayne.  Or go of the classic cashmere crewneck (also in plus).  Want cashmere for less?  Quince has good quality cashmere for $50 to $175.

A Silk Skirt and A Matching Shoe // I know that for many of us, we grab a sweater and jeans or pants and don’t spend much time thinking about how else we could style a basic sweater.  So for this first look, I wanted to dress up the sweater.

I chose this chartreuse silk skirt from J.Crew because 1) yellow and grey look awesome together, and 2) I wanted something unexpected, and this bright hue is definitely that.  But if you want more of a neutral, J.Crew certainly has them.  For more affordable options, I found this skirt at Quince, which comes in a wide variety of colors, and a very affordable option on Amazon.

The key to making this look work is pairing the shoe.  It brings it all together in a fun way.  For the chartreuse match, I found these knotted sandals, which were a striking option.  They also won’t cut off your leg line with an ankle strap, so bonus.  But if you want a simpler shoe, Marc Fisher has a chartreuse pump.

This look would be fully complete with a silvery clutch or a grey one.  I’d also add a burgundy pedicure.  My favorite is OPI Bogota Blackberry.

A Soft Shirt and A Collar Necklace // This is a bit of a throwback look, but it stands the test of time.  Wearing a necklace under the collar of your shirt gives you a pulled-together, super chic look.  It’s a great way to jazz up an outfit without making it too staid.  I also chose a softer shirt material to lighten up the look a bit.

I chose this silky shirt from Nili Lotan as an example, obviously it’s a bit of a hit to the bank account.  On the more affordable side, Off 5th and DKNY both have options. If you want a poplin option, H&M has you covered.

For the necklace, I fell in love with the necklace combo from Anthro in the photo.  They paired this braided necklace with a collar style and, when twisted like that, they look incredibly chic.  Best of all, they come in both silver and gold, so you could stay in a single palette or mix metals.  Want something similar for under-$50?  I love this Kiko shield necklace, very impactful.

Lastly, I would add a lipstick to this to brighten it.  The Dior Lip Glow balm is super hydrating, and it comes in great colors.  I love No. 6, the berry hue.

Have you tried any clothes from Quince? I feel like all of their cashmere and silk stalk my Instagram, but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet.

I like Quince a lot. I have several $50 cashmere sweaters, I would say as nice/nicer than JCrew quality but not as nice as Naadam. And their silk tank dress, silk skirts and silk strap dress. I am a size 6 on the bottom, 4 on the top and found that I need a size M in the silk pieces. I am pretty hippy for my size so the silk strap dresses I actually got a large, but then the chest was too big and I had to add a couple of stitches to bring the sides in. I always size up to a M in cashmere sweaters for a little bit of an oversized look.
