The Five Best: Concealers & Correctors

Mar 29, 2023

You know you’re 40 when you have favorite concealers, plural.  Add a new baby (miss you, sleep) and acne to the mix and my makeup bag gets a real workout.  So if you need a good concealer recommendation, here are the five I buy and re-buy.

Under Eye Concealer // Revolution Beauty Eye Bright // My favorite under-eye concealer costs just $10.  The formulation goes on smooth and sets beautifully (just add powder) without looking heavy.  The added vitamin-C helps brighten darkness.  I carry mine in my purse for quick touch ups.

Buildable Coverage // Glossier Stretch Concealer // Whether you need a little concealer or a lot of concealer, this Glossier product is a great choice.  In the summer, when my skin is easier to care for, I tap a little on my acne and move on.  The finish is slightly dewy and the formulation literally stretches to prevent it from caking or cracking.  For best results, stipple it on with a flat concealer brush.

Dark Circle Correction // Bobbi Brown Under Eye Corrector // Covering under-eye darkness means neutralizing the blue tones with a pinky-peach corrector.  Bobbi Brown’s corrector (I wear the bisque) has a hint of peach that helps tone down the fact that I haven’t slept in 7-months.

If sticking your finger into a pot of makeup isn’t your jam, Bobbi Brown also makes the corrector in a stick form.  And if you need something from the drugstore dupe section of shelf, e.l.f. makes a peach corrector for <$5.

Full Coverage Concealer // Tarte Shape Tape // Many beauty bloggers will tell you that Tarte’s concealer is the best product they’ve ever used.  And while I’m prone to agree, it’s heavy.  So unless you wear a full face of foundation, this is not the concealer for you.  I only wear it for big events and photos.

The Quick Stick // Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage // Since Sloane was born, time to get ready is really limited.  Laura Mercier’s concealer stick let’s you apply product in a hurry, blend it in with your fingers, slather in powder and move on with your day.  If my skin is up to it (translation: if I have less acne that day), I skip the foundation and just apply this concealer as needed.  Need a dupe?  Almay has one that works well.

I love the ease of the product and the effectiveness.  I ran out, didn’t think I would rebuy, and within 72-hours, I was at Ulta to grab a replacement.  Sometimes, you don’t realize you love a product until it’s gone.

My favorite concealer has been Hourglass – it’s a slightly heavier concealer (which I need – didn’t like dewy look) and I’ve been using it faithfully for a couple years now. Before I liked lancome, but prefer hourglass.

  2. Mrs. Jones says:

I’ve had undereye circles since puberty and have tried dozens of concealers. The best is Make Up For Ever Full Cover Concealer. Full stop.

  3. CeeCee says:

I’m very fair and it’s a CHALLENGE to find a good color match as well as good under eye coverage on my middle age skin. NARS ended up being the winner. Creamy and easy to blend!

  4. Madeleine says:

Hi Abra, as a relatively new mama myself, would you be willing to do an update quick beauty routine for workdays v momming days? I do not know how much interest there would be but would love to hear yours (for science and research!).

  5. Debbie says:

I loved the Glossier product but had to discontinue use due to contact dermatitis issues. I switched to the Bobbi Brown product, but found it to be so dry I couldn’t use it.

    • Belle says:

Becca has a corrector you might try. Fiera also has one that is more moisturizing because it’s made for mature skin.

    • TheLOOP says:

I have had the same issues with Bobbi Brown and dryness. It’s a HG product for so many that I was surprised it went on so dry.

  6. Jamie says:

Mine are the Nars creamy color corrector and Cle de Peau concealer (heavy coverage).

  7. Jill says:

This is so timely. I was about to send you a question to see if you had any new favorites. I still like the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind you recommended before but feeling I need something peach, so just ordered the E.L.F. item to try it. My under eye circles are purple and getting worse as I get older. Boyfriend thought I had a shiner. Sigh. Thank you!

  8. Leigh says:

Have you tried the Replenix concealer that TIBAL recommends? I’m intrigued but my skin doesn’t always match hers…

  9. Naomi says:

I’ve usually got an extremely light makeup routine. I’m lucky to have pretty fuss-free skin, so I don’t care for foundation. I usually use moisturizer + sunscreen and call it a day before applying blush and eye makeup. But lately, I’ve been noticing much darker circles under my eyes. Does anyone have a recommendation for a concealer I can use without foundation? Thanks!

    • Jenny says:

Am similarly lucky to have clear and low-maintenance skin. Have had circles since my early teens. I still skip foundation but really like maybelline age rewind concealer. Have used other ones in the past and liked them, but I feel like the age rewind is a quarter of the price and just as good.

  10. Lucy says:

FYI the Tarte concealer in the image above is the Creaseless Concealer, which is TERRIBLE. Shape Tape all the way for me.

  11. k says:

Thank you for the Revolution Beauty Eye Bright rec! So good! It is light and bright. Huge improvement for my undereyes!

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
