The Find: Buy It in Every Color

Sep 30, 2021

When I was younger, I would often own the same item in multiple colors.  Love that J.Crew cardigan?  You need it in five colors.  Love those ballet flats?  Three colors.  But this doesn’t happen as much as it used to, with a few notable exceptions.

Karen Kane’s Cascade Faux Wrap Dress is one of those exceptions.  I own it in black.  I own it in navy.  And after this order processes, I’ll own the two below as well.

Do I have a problem?  Only if you think owning multiples of a dress that makes me feel good about my appearance (even on days when I don’t) is a problem.

This speckled Karen Kane dress is a fun alternative to the solid.  The abstract dot print gives it a little something extra without it being too much.

This puff sleeve version also caught my eye.  I like that the sleeve gives it a slightly on-trend look while keeping the same great cascade-wrap shape.  It’s a really flattering option that feels a bit dressed up.

Plus-size?  Sadly, only the solid black is available in that size range.  The standard sizing is 0-16.

Owning multiples in different colors allows one to have a uniform with variety. Such a confidence boost to reach in the closet and find the thing that fits and makes you feel amazing.

OH, damn, I love this speckle print. I just sold a red one (true red) on Poshmark because it was just too loud and not quite right for me.

    • Andrea says:

I ended up selling my true red as well! Something about it just never worked for me. It was too much party for office and too much office for party. This speckled one may just have to come to my closet…

I 100% still do this. If I love a top or dress, I buy it in three colors. Bottoms, I sometimes just buy identical ones.

Coincidentally, I just bought this exact Karen Kane dress in black for a funeral. I didn’t think it would flatter my body type, which is very straight-up-and-down with a soft tummy and no boobs to speak of — but it DOES. Magic.

As my friend who convinced me to try it said, it will last me the next decade of funerals… I actually don’t have much occasion to wear a conservative black biz-casual dress, as I work in a very casual industry, but I’m fine with it being my go-to funeral dress or if I need to present at a business conference.

I know you love this dress, Belle, but I ordered it a few years ago, and I really don’t like it. I still hold on to it, but I don’t reach for it often. The fabric bothers me (feels like jersey?), and it was too thin to wear with black tights. I much prefer the lined sheath dresses.

    Sorry! Had to say it!

    • Jenn S. says:

I think this cut comes in a few different fabrics. 3/4 I’ve owned have been a soft rayon/spandex blend, and then one was more of a poly material similar to what we see from Lauren Ralph Lauren. I’ve seen both of those blends referred to as jersey even though they’re quite different. I’m curious as to which didn’t work for you and if the other may be a better fit.

I find the rayon ones more comfortable, but the poly to look better in terms of flaw minimization, behaving with tights, etc.

Ha! I have done this recently! I now own that lovely Free People sweater in four colors and it is all due to you! Thank you for keeping me cozy.

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]
