Happy Hour: Back to Breakfast

Aug 13, 2021

One of the great joys of my weekends is brunch on the patio at a restaurant I enjoy called Italia Trattoria.  But between rising Delta cases and the wildfire smoke, that may not be happening for a while.  So I’ve been on the hunt for breakfast items to make on Saturdays that fill that need to do something indulgent on the weekends.  Here’s one of my favorites.

These Strawberry Donut Brioche Scrolls are exactly that special.  Now, I’m going to give you the hacks for making these in a way that won’t take all morning.

First, off, frozen dough.  Frozen brioche dough is a tough find, so try frozen sweet roll dough.  Just thaw a bit, roll out and get to work.  If you can’t find frozen, a brioche mix (the King Arthur Flour one is the best) will save you plenty of time.  Just mix in a bit of vanilla bean paste (available at many grocery stores) and knead it in if you use frozen.

Second, the strawberry jam you choose matters.  I like this one from Tiptree.  Crofter’s also makes a good one that is available at most stores.  Just choose one you would want to eat solo or else you won’t eat the donuts.

Last, strawberry sugar is easy to make if you can find freeze dried strawberries.  Target has them, and Trader Joe’s has them.  It took me almost half-an-hour to realize that they would probably be with the toddler food at my local grocery store.

The cutting and slicing for these is not nearly as intimidating as it seems.  Even if you mess up the pinwheel shapes, they still bake up into a pretty tasty breakfast pastry.  I just serve this with bacon and eggs, or a frittata if I am trying to clean up the crisper drawer.

Not into sweets?  I made these green onion cheddar scones and turned them into breakfast sandwiches.  So good I had to give half the batch away or I’d have torn through all of them in a weekend.

As I’ve mentioned many times, Nordstrom’s classic jersey pajama is my favorite.  Today.  Always.  Forever.  But, H&M has some incredibly luxurious looking pajamas and loungewear pieces right now.  And given that many of us will be spending more time at home this winter, it’s a good opportunity to up our loungewear game.

I love these light sage satin pajamas.  Just add a wrap cardigan for a look that feels very breezy on a Saturday morning.  I also love these taupe rib-knit pants that you can mix with this sleek tank.

Like whimsical, fun prints?  This dotted set is also a favorite of mine.  I own it in two colors.

Plus-size?  H&M’s selection is pretty modest, just three items.  ASOS has a better selection in a comparable price range.  But I thought the nicest pieces were at Lane Bryant, though that costs more than H&M.

My dark under eye circles have been the bane of my existence since I was 12. Is the cause lack of sleep? Dehydration? Sinus issues? Stress? Who the hell knows. But there they are, every day, telling the world that I am an exhausted working Mom.

Sloane loves the pool. She jumps from the deck into the water with a crash, never considering her own safety, only to emerge on the surface, shouting “Again!” The pool is my daughter’s happy place. But no place where I need to wear a swimsuit in public is a happy one for me.

The Mondays: July 22, 2024

The Crowdstrike/Microsoft Meltdown forced me to take a few days off this weekend. No laptop. No billable hours. So we packed Sloane up for a visit to a local llama farm, stopped by the pool, went for coffee, etc. Few things are as funny as watching a 23-month old feed carrots to a ravenous rescue […]
