The Find: A Comfy Skirt for Work

Mar 19, 2021

Yesterday, I shared the comfortable pants that are getting me through long work days.  Today, let’s talk about the skirt that has made my life so much more comfortable.

I’ve talked about this Ponte Pencil Skirt from Ann Taylor before, but it hasn’t gotten its full due.

With no snug waist band and a smooth, heavy ponte fabric, this skirt is like a dream to wear.  No pinching.  No tightness.  Just pure comfort that is still work appropriate.

The skirt is normally <$70, but is 40% off this weekend with code THISISANN.  It also comes in petite.  And I loved it so much, that I just bought the navy.  Because professional, but comfortable is my motto right now.

Plus-size?  Ann Taylor hasn’t expanded their size range yet (they should), but Old Navy has a similar ponte skirt with a mesh liner to achieve what they describe as a “slimming effect.”  My assumption is this is to ensure a smooth look, more than a slimming one.

Considering LOFT just announced they are dropping extended sizing starting in the fall, I wouldn’t hold my breath for AT to come along. COVID bumped me from the top end of regular sizes into plus sizes (a very meaningful 15 pounds apparently), so that’s a double whammy for when I eventually need to go back into the office expected later this summer.

As a stay at home, this is news to me, so I took a peek at the news articles on it. My first thought before looking was why don’t they make cuts to really teeny sizes or make less across the spectrum? As someone who has been a broad range of sizes from 6 to a 14 this certainly makes me think. I’d love for a discussion on this coupled with all of those of us who purchase from Amazon in what can only be deemed as fast, cheap fashion. I’d love to buy purchase things only made in the US, but they are so few and far between that it’s laughable. Love to hear people’s thoughts

      • Allison says:

I had the same thought. If the average American woman is a size 16, surely there are fewer sales of sizes below a 4/6 than above a 12/14.

        • Casey says:

Probably depends on the retailer, obviously they are making the decisions they judge make the most financial sense for them based on the demographic of their typical buyer, who may or may not match up with the average American woman.. But if we want to encourage size inclusivity l don’t think it’s helpful to lobby for them to cut off smaller sizes for the many women who need those anymore than we should encourage scrapping plus sizes. Where I work I see far more women who probably fall in the 6 and under category than the 14 and over segment.

        • Belle says:

So a funny thing about these studies about the size of American women. I learned recently that the size guide they use to decide where women fall is from the early 2000s. So it reads as size 16, but it’s actually a 12 under the revised size guides most brands use.

          • Diane says:

Which explains why I wear the same (and sometimes smaller!) “size” I wore in high school in the late 90s, even though I am 25 lbs. heavier.

I looked at the Ann Taylor skirt today and the pants you recommended yesterday. If one has a tummy, and I do, these would emphasize that, right?

  3. Diane says:

I know you’ve done a lot of 2/3/4 ways with black skirts over the years and I actually go back and look at prior posts for inspiration on a pretty regular basis. I’m ready for a spring refresh this year and would love to see some new ideas with the black skirt and black pants with pieces currently available for purchase if you’re looking for post ideas!

  4. MG says:

I’m 5 months postpartum and who knows what my body is doing. I bought this based off of your recommendation and love it! So comfy and looks polished. Thanks

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
