The Find: A Comfy Wrap Dress

Feb 12, 2021

Like many people, I gained weight during isolation.  With gyms closed, my muscle tone and overall physical condition also deteriorated.  And my work clothes are snug and sometimes uncomfortable.

This weight gain isn’t permanent, but being pinched by tight clothes all day isn’t fun.  Wrap dresses are my salvation.  On the days when I just need to be comfortable, I reach for a simple matte jersey wrap.

Wrap dresses adjustable, flattering and don’t have any tight seams.  You can add a fitted blazer or a long cardigan or a cropped knit blazer, and you have a professional outfit that feels good on your body.

Lark & Ro’s Jersey Dress is a sleek basic.  It has a simple look with a flattering silhouette.  And it comes in a dozen colors and patterns including basic neutrals and fun prints.

The dress is machine washable, which is great for these times.  And comes in sizes XS to XL.

Love wrap dresses?  Ann Taylor always has a few.  Banana Republic has a wrap sweater dress that I love (also in petite and tall).  Boden also has a good selection.  Plus-size?  This Loveapella dress is worth a look.

I know the initial cost is exorbitant, but have you considered purchasing a Peloton? I finally caved and ordered it in December after canceling my gym membership. It showed up a few weeks ago and I LOVE it. It’s been a great way to burn calories and get in a sweaty workout when the gym and running outside aren’t options.

I LIKE WRAP DRESSES TOO BUT HAVE A HARD TIME WEARING THEM IN SAN FRANCISCO AS IT IS A REAL STRUGGLE TO KEEP THEM CLOSED IN THE WIND.

Hi there: I just bought the Lark and Ro dress, per your excellent recommendation. It’s a nice, basic wrap dress, but I am struggling with what to wear under it. It’s a bit on the thin side, so you can see bulges from tights. Any suggestions for what to wear underneath for a smoothing effect? Thank you!

I love the idea of wrap dresses, but when I gain weight I gain weight only around my midsection and I feel like wrap dresses just don’t look good if you no longer have a waist. Do you (or any other readers) have any tips on what might look good in that situation?

I sometimes wear a wide belt with a wrap dress. You cinch the waist, pin the ends flat, and then wear a wide belt over it. If you choose a belt with an elastic back, or that’s a little larger than the one you need, then you shouldn’t lost the comfort factor.

As you may have noticed, I do not have the most creative personal style. I am here for basics. But what I’m always looking for is basic-but, a piece of clothing that is basic but just a little different.

The Mondays: June 17, 2024

From the rooftop deck of my D.C. hotel I can see it all. The Capitol building, where I worked on and off for a decade. My first apartment where my three-doors-down neighbor was a young Senator Obama. My second apartment building where I bounced from unit-to-unit as my salary rose and I was finally able […]
