Happy Hour: Tennessee Whiskey

Jun 5, 2020

I first heard about Uncle Nearest Whiskey on CBS This Morning.  The story described Nearest Green as “the slave who taught Jack Daniels to make whiskey.”  Brought back by Fawn Weaver, a bestselling black author, worked with the family of Nearest Green to celebrate his legacy by creating a black owned whiskey label.

The Uncle Nearest website features a number of cocktail recipes, but the one I already have the ingredients for it the Uncle’s Garden — St. Germaine, pineapple juice, and egg white.  I also keep dried, edible Hibiscus flowers in my pantry (they taste great in champagne), so I may toss one of those in as well.

The story of Uncle Nearest is really the story of how history has chosen to set aside the stories  and contributions of African Americans in favor of white stories.  So help reclaim a little piece of American history and put a bottle of Uncle Nearest on your bar next to your every day bottle of Jack.

At work on a casual Friday or at home sipping cocktails, this Chelsea28 dress is as comfortable as it is pretty.  In your choice of purple, red, or black, it’s an easy, machine-washable dress that is perfect for traveling (whenever that happens again).

Love a shift dress?  I also found this sleeveless Tommy Bahama dress and this chambray dress from Draper James.  For something more dressed up, try this eyelet shift from Ann Taylor.

Plus-size?  Lafayette 148 has you covered.  I also like this floral shift from Junarose.  Petite? LOFT has a petite tweed dress and this simple BR t-shirt dress (also in misses).  Maternity?  A neighbor lives in this Maternal America dress when it gets hot.

I heard about Nearest Green through the podcast “Brought to You By” – I absolutely love this story (and bourbon, so it’s my next purchase at the liquor store). Here’s the pod on how Nearest’s history was rightfully included at the Jack Daniels distillery: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/47-drinking-buddies-jack-daniel-and-nearest-green/id1413374332?i=1000470855306

Thanks for sharing about Uncle Nearest. My husband is a big Jack Daniels fan, so I will definitely be buying a bottle of this for him to try.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
