Day. Night. Weekend. A Quick Overnight

Mar 5, 2020

This week, we’re launching a new, twice-monthly series: Day. Night. Weekend. It’s all about what to wear when traveling.  Today’s event is a quick overnight trip just for fun.

A few weeks ago, Kyle and I traveled to Coeur d’Alene for a staycation at the local resort.  It was a relaxed day of spa visits, a nice dinner and a casual brunch with friends.  These three outfits plus a comfortable pair of pajamas were all needed for a quick overnight.

J.Crew Scoopneck Tee // AG Farrah Jeans // Gold Hoop Earrings // zeroUV Sunglasses // LL. Bean Jacket // Superga Leopard Sneakers // Madewell Essential Overnight Bag

H&M Pleated Wrap Dress (also in maternity) // Topshop Drop Earrings // Deborah Lippmann Gel Polish // Aldo Susanita Clutch // Ann Taylor Lorna Sandals

BP Cable Knit Sweater // NYDJ Marilyn Straight Leg Jeans // Lele Sadoughi Hoops // Charlotte Tilbury Medium Pillow Talk // Rebecca Minkoff Apple Watch Bracelet // Urban Expressions Crossbody // BC Footwear Ankle Boot

love the idea of this new series!

  2. Lea says:

Oh, I’d love to see one of those for a non-Coachellaesque weekend in Palm Springs!

  3. Jamie says:

This is a cute idea but I’d love to see a version with repeats. It seems insane to me to bring two pairs of jeans for an overnight trip…

    • Samantha says:

@Jamie It’s simple. Don’t pack the white jeans and rewear the blue jeans from the first outfit.

    • Naomi says:

I was also thinking about how I’d streamline. I’d drop the sneakers in the first outfit and keep the boots from the third. The fewer the shoes per trip, the better!

Belle, I LOVE this idea for a series!

  4. BN says:

LOVE this idea! (Despite the travel bans in place at the moment…)
I’m sure you have tons of ideas for future posts, but here are a few travel attire challenges I have: comfy plane outfit while traveling with colleagues; what to change into (at the airport bathroom) when you land at your destination and immediately need to get to work/meeting/etc (would be great to have suggestions on beauty products for this one); social event with coworkers while on business travel (ex: you land on the weekend before Monday meetings and your colleagues take you out to see the city on Sunday – how to dress for lots of walking/activity but still professional-ish); how to travel light when you’re on a week long business trip and you don’t want your colleagues to think you’re wearing dirty pants and just changing your blouse.

  5. Ruchita says:

What a great idea for a series! It’s really helpful to have specific ideas for outfits.

    • Lauren says:

Another cool spin on the idea that could be helpful is packing for a weekend of conferences/meetings.

  6. Cait says:

Love this series so much, and really looking forward to seeing ideas for more destinations! Would also love to see ideas for hair for trips like this- I want my hair to look decent but can’t fathom packing a bunch of hair products and gadgetry just for a weekend.

  7. k-t says:

Just another cheer for a great posting idea!

Look forward to more posts, especially if you can show that it all fits in a carryon (including all toiletries and in-flight entertainment). We generally only check bags when we go skiing.

Minimizing the shoes without wearing Grandma-ish shoes out to drinks/dinner is a challenge.

  8. ral says:

    Great new series! Very creative!

  9. Kelly Stoner says:

Looooove this feature! So handy – can’t wait to see more in the future!

  10. Aar1 says:

Love this material! Great content addition!

  11. CarrIe says:

Love this idea and the outfits!

  12. stephanie says:

I love this new series! Hope to see more of this!

  13. Andrea says:

Hearts in my eyes for this feature! Even when I don’t have trips on the horizon, I find reading about packing lists to be so soothing and so exciting at the same time.

FWIW if anyone else loves the first look but prefers a v-neck tee, I never miss a chance to sing the praises of the Madewell whisper cotton tees. So comfy and flattering, and they come in a ton of color options.

Thanks for always finding ways to keep the blog fresh!

  14. MOnica T says:

This is such a great post, love the outfit ideas!

Just out of curiosity does anyone know if that Madewell overnighter has a luggage sleeve? It doesn’t say in the description but you never know.

  15. Jlo says:

I love this! When I worked in D.C. and first found your blog, I really enjoyed how you’d give hair styling / makeup tips for each outfit. Thanks for including makeup and nail polish in this series!

  16. Amelia says:

Love this new series, the outfits in the post and the styling ideas you included, like nail polish, accesories, etc. Those really elevate the outfits. I agree with what others have said about there being so many bulky items for such a short trip. For my personal travel preferences, it feels a bit excessive to pack three pairs of shoes and two jeans. However, it’s easy to figure out what to tweak and edit depending on one’s travel style, and I did enjoy the variety you presented as it gave me plenty of ideas. (Another commenter said they’d leave out the sneakers and just take the boots. I’d do the opposite to make sure I have a comfy, non-heeled option.)

  17. Nel says:

Love the new feature! Also, I bought that h&m dress after seeing it featured here – it’s even more beautiful in person! Highly recommend!

  18. Amy says:

I love the idea for this post, but I agree with some of the other readers that it would be useful to see posts like this with pieces that can be styled differently each day. Realistically, I don’t know how many of us would be packing 3 handbags and 3 different pairs of shoes for a 3-day trip.

  19. MA says:

    Love this new feature!

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
