The Find: A Flattering Dress for ‘Blah’ Days

Feb 26, 2020

When I’m feeling burnt out, getting dressed for work feels more like a punishment than a joy.  A busy week at work usually means that I’ve been sitting too much and eating junk, which only makes that feeling of ‘blah’ worse.  So what do I wear on a day when I just want sweatpants, water, and sleep?  A comfortable, flattering dress.

This Maggy London Gigi Dress is an excellent choice for when thinking about your outfit is just too much.  The color is bold enough to be fun, and subtle enough to be work appropriate.  And the pleated front makes it a flattering choice for days when you’re not feeling great about your body.

I own this dress, and it’s a great pick for work travel.  I’ve packed it for conferences and it works as a day-to-drinks option.

This is an older style, so the sizes somewhat limited.  The dress is also available in green, black, and red.  And did I mention that it’s discounted to $59 right now?

I love everything about this dress! Thanks for the inspiration— I’ll keep and eye out for something like it in plus sizes.

  2. Cindi says:

Hi! That’s a gorgeous dress. I am pear shaped and my top half is almost 2 sizes smaller than I am from the waist down. Any suggestions for making g this style work on my figure?

  3. Maggie says:

After having babies, I simply cannot wear a dress with ruching like that without at least one person a day asking me if I’m pregnant again. It’s the worst.

  4. A says:

It appears to a be ponte-like material, which is one of the most unflattering fabrics to a large majority of women in this style. I’ve been on my anti-ponte crusade for a while (personal problem!) and it grinds my gears that it’s still so popular yet so unflattering!

    • Different A says:

Can you send some of those ponte dresses my way? I feel like it’s one of the most flattering fabrics–smooths over curves and/or rolls without clinging.

      • Chris says:

Agree with both of you.. With ponte its all about the weight of the fabric… Happy Friyay!

        • Caitlin says:

Yeah, I agree, it’s got to be a thick ponte fabric. A thin ponte fabric won’t do anyone any favors, like most really cheap fabrics.

      • Original A says:

You can have all the ponte! I see Abra and others post about how flattering dresses in this material are, so I’ve tried on different styles and brands over the years. If it’s A-line, then it’s fine. But this sheath style hugs every curve, and roll, and lump. I’m 5’7”, wear a size 8/10, and can’t say I’m super toned but this material highlights every flaw. I think it usually shows lines and lumps and bumps on others unless they’re extremely fit or have excellent shape wear underneath. More power to those women, I just get frustrated that such a popular and common material doesn’t work for me. Getting off the soapbox—if it works for you, wonderful!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.

The Find: Like a McCall’s Pattern

When I was young, my Mother used to bring me along when she would go shopping for fabric. As a result, I spent a lot of time, killing time, flipping through pattern books. So when I spotted this dress, I was instantly transported to the pattern table at a Jo-Ann Fabrics.
