With my weight in flux, I’m not in a place to be spending good money on work attire. But I need a few items that fit in case I have to go on a series of multiple interviews or I find a job in the coming weeks. So where to begin?
We’ve talked before about choosing a primary color for your work wardrobe — brown, black, navy or grey. This way, all of your pieces can be mixed and matched easily. My professional wardrobe is predominantly black mixed with white and dark navy.
This WHBM Body Perfecting Seamed Sheath (also in plus-size) is miraculous. The fabric is a stretch material with a mesh lining. It doesn’t constrict you, but it does smooth. And that’s all I want. I’m not trying to pretend to be thinner, but I just want to feel confident, and a little smoothing will do that for you.
The shape is also great. The wide straps. The v-neck. The slim fit. It’s an updated classic.
If you’re good on black basics, WHBM also has two other sleeveless sheath dresses that caught my eye. This raspberry square neck sheath is also lovely. The mix of blues in an abstract pattern on this sleeveless sheath is pretty cool, could be a good work-event cocktail dress.

I’m in the same boat as you, knee and leg surgery got in the way of my usual healthy lifestyle, and I ate too much from just being bummed out about not being able to move. I got this wrap dress from Lark and Ro on amazon in black, it’s really inexpensive and the wrap fits nicely around new curves. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079M12HLF/ref=twister_B079M19WY9
What’s the material like? I’m on the hunt for a flattering, basic, black dress for my mom that’s somewhere between professional and cocktail. She’s been avoiding professional galas and cocktail party events, because she feels like she never has anything to wear. She’s kind of a tomboy, and despite having bangin’ legs tends to gravitate toward slacks and over-sized blouses. I’d love to find her a dress she feels confident in that she can dress up or down and accessorize for a variety of events, but everything I’ve found is either too office-y or has embellishments or just doesn’t flatter her body.
It feels like a crepe/knit, but it’s not. It’s a bit more…stretchy (?) than that.
Ugh, this looks like exactly what I’ve been looking for, but they don’t have my size.
Do you have a store near you? It was sold out in my size for a bit, and I just called store to find it.
Bought it– on sale for like $70 and free 2 day shoprunner shipping. Score. I’ve been looking for a black sheath dress with a V neck and without random design stuff on it.
Love the look of this dress. It looks similar to one I have in my closet that I hardly end up wearing because I have yet to find the perfect blazer or cardigan to wear over it. Some cardigans work well, but I feel like they dress it down for professional settings (fine for day-to-day at the office). But a blazer really needs to be just right to wear over a dress. Plus, what color blazer would work here? I have a black-and-white tweed-ish JCrew boxy blazer that, in theory, would look great but really just looks, well, boxy. Would love to hear your thoughts and would also love if you could do a post on blazers to wear with dresses! 🙂
I think you’d be better off with a blazer. I would go with white, one button.
I can’t reply to your reply, for some reason! Anyway, thanks for the suggestion. I’ll keep an eye out for a white blazer, although I have some Miami Vice hangups!
I have another dress from this line and it’s amazing. Any chance you would do a post on how to style this dress a couple of different ways?
You’ve mentioned being pear-shaped and needing to get dresses altered to fit. I’m in the same boat. Did this one fit you off the rack or did you take it to a tailor?
I always need to have the straps taken up because I’m so long torsoed, but I did not need the sides taken in
I can’t reply to the thread, but there are more sizes available online today, and I ordered!
