Pick Six: Follow the Trend Line

Jan 30, 2017

Some bloggers specialize in the cutting edge of style.  I’ve never cared much about whether something is hot, or not.  My style tends to run to the classic, the timeless.  I’m usually on the hunt for pieces that will look as good today as they will five years from now.  But sometimes it’s nice to indulge in something that might only be good for a season or two.  Here are six pieces that are hot off the presses.

Have an trusty old handbag that could use a bit of an update?  Breathe a bit of life into your satchel or tote with a new guitar-style strap or tassel.  This set from Kate Spade mixes a soft blush and a black and white print (be still my beating heart).  This geo-embroidered strap would look great on a navy bag.

For something small, look for a colored luggage tag or tassel.  Or if you want to go bold, decorate your bag with these adhesive letters and stickers.

Blouses and sweaters with ruffles are everywhere.  I love the over-the-top femininity of the unexpected frills.  This $28 blouse from New Look allows you to indulge in the trend without overdoing it.  I also love this $64 YAS frill sweater in an earthy mauve.  Or take the trend to a more timeless place with this ruffle-trim sweater from Shrimps.  Plus-size?  Try this Eloquii shoulder flared top.

If you watched the Golden Globes, you know that yellow is the color for spring.  Whether it’s marigold, ochre, or butter, it’s going to be a very sunny spring.  The first dress from Marks and Spencer is dark enough to wear today, but bright enough for a few months from now.  If you want to indulge in the brighter side of the color, have a look at this lacy Self Portrait-inspired cocktail dress.

Have a party or wedding on the books?  Don’t want to buy a new dress?  I find that a pair of statement earrings can give you the zest of a new look without the price tag.  Plus, unlike a dress that might only get a few wears before you tire of it, earrings can be worn for years to come.

Soft blue stripes on sculptural tops are dominating my Instagram feed.  This Petersyn Dahlia Top is from the higher end of the scale, but gosh, it’s beautiful.  For some more affordable options, try Shopbop.  This one-shoulder Style Mafia top will sell out quickly given its price.  For something really bold, this StyleKeepers top is really trendy.  Or if you want something you could wear to work, this English Factory blouse with embroidered flower accent is adorable.

When skinny jeans came on the scene, many of us were skeptical.  Within two years, tapered leg jeans had looted and pillaged.  Soon, most of us only owned skinny jeans.  My own closet is skinny jean-dominant, but not for long.

Flare leg and wide leg jeans are coming back in a big way.  So if you don’t own a pair, I would recommend buying a pair.  Whether you choose skinny bootcut, trouser legs, or 70s-reminiscent flares, leg openings are about to get wider.

  1. Cait says:

All hail the flares! With a pear shape, skinny jeans are the HARDEST to make flattering (possible, with Belle’s advice, but not easy!). Hooray for the return of a balanced silhouette!

    • Jenn S. says:

Preach, this is what I came to the comments to say. I hope more balanced legs come to non-jeans soon – a shopping trip yesterday still showed a lot of straight legs (some, but not as many boot or flare cuts as I’d like) in pants.

    • Caroline says:

I’m pear shaped and find bootcut/flares a lot harder to make flattering. Why would you want to add more bulk at your base? I like skinnies because they minimize my lower half.

  2. terri says:

Hallelujah and Praise Be! thank you denim industry!

  3. MS says:

I would love a post on how to style bootcut and flare jeans, particularly what shoes to wear. I still wear a lot of booties or boots and find those work best with skinny jeans because they tuck in. I want to join in on other styles, but I’m not sure how without wearing pumps.

    • Brit says:

Second the idea for a post about what type of shoes to wear with non-skinny jeans!

      • Caroline says:

Same here– the last time bootcut was in style I was wearing heels, but now I’ve come around to flats and don’t see myself ever going back. The interesting loafers, ballet flats, and oxfords that are popular now would get swallowed up by a flared leg, and us petite ladies absolutely need a heel with bootcut to avoid looking squat.

      • Sade says:

I was going to ask literally the same thing. Most of my stuff works for skinnies & this is a whole new silhouette for me.

  4. Mary says:

I like skinnies, but I like wider legs, too. Besides the fact that they work better for my body shape, they also make it easier to wear cowboy boots on the weekends. Being a midwest farm country gal, that’s important.

  5. Cindy says:

Does anybody else think that skinny jeans look good on about 1% of the population?!?! It’s about time the industry started making jeans for the rest of us again!

  6. Opal says:

The ability to update, seasonally or stylishly, handbags has made me a fan of the O-Bag. With a change of handles and insert my bag goes from spring to fall.

    • Caroline says:

I thought that when they first came out, but with the improvements in fabric and rise in waists they’ve become much more flattering than other styles. I guess it’s possible I just got used to them but I also think they look less sloppy than they used to.

  7. K says:

Where else can I pick up purse straps? I recently picked up this Zac Posen bag for $40 on clearance at Barney’s and love it but the strap is waaay too short for me. I like it without the strap as a clutch but really want it to be a crossbody.

  8. Becca says:

I recently wore the moonrock drop earrings to my post-elopement bash. They are amazing. I have never gotten so many compliments on an accessory. Great piece.

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
