Welcome to The Work Edit!

Aug 15, 2016

Good morning, Ladies.

In 2008, I was working as a staff assistant in a Capitol Hill office–giving tours, answering phones, eating PB&J, and too poor to take an August vacation.  To fill the empty hours, I decided to start a fashion blog.  Because my work and my life was deeply entrenched in Capitol Hill, I called my blog Capitol Hill Style.

Eight years later, my career has changed, my address has changed, and the readership of this blog has swelled far beyond the Beltway.  So I decided it was time for a change; welcome to The Work Edit.

***

Since its inception, my driving focus has been to provide professional women with a fashion blog that doesn’t pretend that the boardroom and the catwalk have anything in common.  A place where suits with shorts and six-inch heels don’t masquerade as work attire.  And where words like “cardigan,” “Ann Taylor,” and “nylons” aren’t whispered in hushed tones.

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be launching new features and bringing back some old ones.  There will be more posts focused on career.  These will include a new series profiling successful women in a variety of fields and at different stages in their professional journey.  But despite the new name and the renewed focus, regular readers won’t notice a huge difference in content.  This site will continue to be a place that understands what it means to dress for success while living a real life.

***

Without such an amazing group of readers, I would have stopped blogging long ago.  Thanks to you, this blog is still the best part of my day.  And I cannot wait for you to share in its next chapter.

xoxo, Belle

We still love your blog and can’t wait for the next iteration! Good for you for moving forward and finding the time to do all of this plus your very full life. You are an inspiration to us all and a great blogger to boot.

  2. Halley says:

Loving the new layout — it’s beautiful! Looking forward to the new features.

  3. Numa says:

Thanks for all your great work over all these years! Keep up the good work. 🙂

  4. Katie says:

Belle – I have learned SO MUCH about dressing professionally and realistically through your blog. Though my field is higher education, though I’m in Indy, and though I have less occasions to be glamorous, I have enjoyed every post. Looking forward to this new chapter!

  5. Sarah says:

I really love the look of the new site!

  6. Abbie says:

OMG I am in love with your new site design. It’s so clean and beautiful. Though I’m not really the target audience (I’m still eating ramen on tight budget days & work in a low-key startup where I can wear the clothes I plan to exercise in later that day), this blog has still given me so much valuable info & inspiration. I’m glad I found it & read your posts daily. Excited for the new changes!

  7. Jenn says:

This is hands down my favorite blog and has been for many years. Congrats on the new site and new name. 🙂

  8. Michaela says:

Congratulations! Checking this blog is one of my favorite daily routines. Can’t wait to see what you have in store! Also pumped about this “newsletter” button!

  9. Crystal says:

Love the new, sleek layout! I can tell you put a lot of work into it — it looks fantastic!

  10. Kacy says:

I’m a new reader, but I have to say I am obsessed and so excited for what is to come. Good on you for keeping afloat through difficulties! Congratulations.

  11. Monica says:

Wow, I am so excited! I work in IT and there are very few women in this industry, so with no one to look up to style-wise, I’ve used your blog to try to up my game over the last many years. I’ve always found something here to inspire me, and I love your attitude and drive. This is the only blog I still read every day and I always look forward to your posts, can’t wait to see what is in store!

    • Jenn S. says:

Your story sounds like mine, except replace, “up my game,” with, “learn how to dress like a stylish professional adult in the first place.” IT is tough! I have a female boss now, and I’m pleased that we’re in the same sartorial stride *without* me having to step my wardrobe up a notch.

Thank you, Belle! I would be sorely behind on dressing for the job I want without you and your efforts with the blog.

  12. D says:

The new look of the site is wonderful! Excited to see what is in store 🙂

Congrats! Been loving your Blog for years!

  21. AT says:

Congrats! Looks great. Still the highlight of my day, as it was when I started on the Hill 6 years ago. Just promoted from a district office position, I remember sitting in my hotel room at Capitol Hill Suites (now Capitol Hill Hotel) as I was about to start my new job as a scheduler thinking, omg, what do I wear? I had one pair of black pants and a few tops. I googled “Capitol Hill style”, and I haven’t missed a post since that day. 🙂 Thanks Belle!

  22. Hurrah! Beautifully done!

  23. Belle says:

There’s only one blog that I read on the regular and has followed me from being and LC to a lobbyist with marriage and a child in between it all. Thank you for being a reliable place for real women to get some fashion advice, real talk and the many other things that keep me coming back over the years!

  24. kristen says:

I was so excited to log on this morning and see this beautiful layout! Great job girl!

  28. Sarah says:

You are so awesome Belle! I have been a faithful reader for eight years and I can’t get through the day without coming here to check up on your posts. I’m so happy for your achievements and this new design. Congrats.

  29. Frannie says:

I have come to rely on your blog for regular fashion, beauty, and career advice. I check it daily. I’m currently home with little kids, but plan to jump back into the work force this year. CaphillStyle has been my life line connecting me to the professional world. Keep up the great work!

  30. SR says:

Thanks a lot for sharing your insights through all these years. I have relied on your guidance as I transitioned from University sweatshirts to professional attire. You have helped me figure out what to wear to meet the CEO and right skincare to prevent acne. Congratulations on the new beginning and I look forward to additional content focused on career!

  31. Laurie says:

Congratulations, Belle and I love the new name – Work Edit couldn’t fit your blog better. I’ve been a long time reader, and your blog is always the first thing I check in my RSS reader. Looking forward to a lot more amazing content!

  32. Laura says:

I started reading your blog when I lived in DC and worked as an attorney at a large law firm. I’ve since left the practice of law, moved to two different states out West, and started a job a tech company. But, I still come back to your blog for great style tips and life advice from a contemporary. Thanks for keeping it up!

  33. Lauren says:

    Belle,
I’ve been reading the blog for a few years now. I think I got into it from a ‘fashion blog’ perspective, but it is and has been so much more. I’m not the most ‘professional’ of women, but I appreciate all aspects of this blog. You’re the most authentic blogger I’ve come across, and I can’t say how much that is appreciated, given the enormous amount of bloggers/paid advertising. Loving the new layout!

  34. MA says:

I started reading in undergrad circa 2009ish and have kept up ever since. While I can count the number of times I have worn a suit on one hand (military health care) I keep coming back for your dry wit, feminist opinions, and impeccable taste. Thanks for your continued dedication to curating my favorite blog!

  35. Lauren says:

So excited for this! I started reading in 2011, as I graduated college and started work in the CA capitol. Fastforward to now and I’ve worked at 2 PR agencies and now at a large Healthcare system. Your advice has always been practical for the workplace and I’m excited to see what a blog for working women in general can offer. If anyone can give adaptable, real advice it’s you. Kudos to a new start.

  36. terri says:

After lunch I went back to check out the new layout a little closer. I really like the All Categories button at the top which allows us to see all the postings by calendar date. Nice feature!

  37. Kimberly says:

I’ve been following you for several years now but never commented. Keep up the excellent work! Well done.

  38. AAR says:

I love your blog and am thrilled you’re sticking with it! Excited to see the progress and already love the new graphic design! xo

  39. Susie says:

Thanks for keeping me so well informed & up to date! This soon to be 54 year young, professional woman looks forward to reading your blog daily. Love the new look! Thanks for all that you do!!

  40. Beth says:

I love the new design and the twist in perspective, but thank you for the focus you have on very practical, yet beautiful fasion for work. As a consultant I must dress like my clients and I would not be able to do so as efficiently without this blog – greatly appreciated! I’m looking forward to continuing to be inspired – congratulations and thank you!

  41. Leigh says:

Thanks for all your hard work! I have very much enjoyed reading your blog for several years now. I work in healthcare IT just south of DC and your tips and examples are great. Your thoughts on what works—and what doesn’t—give me confidence in my clothing selections in a world where there seem to be few professional voices getting it right. Can’t wait to see what you do next!

  42. Blue Sky Feather says:

Congratulations on the new look! I’m a daily reader and am so happy you decided to continue and transform this space into the new you/us! Thank you for your inspiration, credibility, and fashion advice. Work life wouldn’t be the same without caphillstyle.

  43. Loyal Reader says:

Belle, everything looks great, and I love the new name and layout! I’ve enjoyed reading since 2009 and can’t wait to see what you do next. Good luck from a loyal reader.

  44. Kate says:

Found your blog 4 years ago when I was getting ready to move to DC for grad school. 4 years later it’s still one of the few blogs I still read and my favorite thing to click to each day. Thanks so much for all of your hard work and good luck with post-law school life!

  45. Meredith says:

Love everything about the new path, and I cannot wait to see what you do with it!

  46. Bea says:

Love it, Belle! I’ve been reading your blog since 2011.
It’s a daily habit of mine to check out your blog. 🙂

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
