Ask Belle: Leave-in Hair Conditioners

Feb 12, 2015

Hi Belle,

Do you have a leave-in hair treatment that you like?  I’m thinking about trying Moroccan Oil, but I’m afraid it will weigh my hair down. Have you tried it?

Claire

I have tried Moroccan Oil.  I use it in the summer when I highlight my hair.  It helps combat the dryness.  If you’re worried about weighing down your hair, try the light version.

I also like Caviar Overnight Hair Rescue.  I usually just use it on my ends to perk them up.

Need a drugstore option?  I’ve used the spray-in Infusium 23 conditioner.  It works well if you use it every day, and it doesn’t add weight to the hair.

If other readers have suggestions, especially based on different hair types, feel free to leave them in the comments.

I love Morrocan Oil– it smells amazing and doesn’t leave weird residue. Currently, I’m using Miracle 10 Silk Express. No complaints there!

  2. Rachel says:

First- I tried the Aveda Damage Remedy for Intensive Restructuring Treatment you recommended a few weeks ago and I absolutely love it. I’m 3 weeks in and have noticed a huge difference by using it once a week.

I use the Moroccan oil smoothing lotion– a little bit goes a long way, but it helps! However, since using the Aveda treatment, I haven’t had to use the Moroccan oil.

  3. Genevieve says:

I’ve been really enjoying the Josie Maran Light Argan Oil on my ends — I have straight, very fine hair that tends towards dryness, and it does not weigh my hair down. I’ve also heard good things about the It’s A 10 Miracle Leave-In plus Keratin!

    • Pam says:

Yes. I used to use Morrocan oil when my salon had a sale and offered a huge pump bottle for $15. When I went to buy it again it was pretty pricy. I r craved a sample of the its a 10 miracle leave in plus keratin and have been very happy with it.

I love It’s a 10 miracle leave in product. Available at CVS – inexpensive, works well with all hair types, and smells great!

  5. SM says:

I have thick, long hair and I use two things. I first use Its a 10 on wet hair as a heat protectant while blow drying my hair and then layer in the Moroccan Oil when the hair is almost dry for the remaining blow dry time. I have found this combo makes my hair silky and frizz free.

  6. RW says:

I have shoulder length slightly wavy hair, very fine and color-treated. I use a little Nuxe Huile Prodigieuse oil just on the bottom few inches while it’s wet, and let it sit for 20 minutes or so before combing through. The light summery scent also helps get me through this time of year!

  7. Emily says:

I have baby fine blonde hair, and the Morroccan oil actually colored my hair a brassy gold. I’d recommend Bumble and Bumble Hair Dresser’s Invisible Oil. It has UV and heat protection.

    • Claire says:

+1 for Bumble and Bumble Hair Dresser’s Invisible Oil for fine hair! It kills frizz and dry ends, and I can reapply as needed for days between washing without looking like a grease ball. I couldn’t do the same with Moroccan Oil (but I also didn’t know there was a light version…)

    • Lexi says:

The Bumble + Bumble oil is great for me– I have curly hair and it doesn’t weigh it down. Good stuff

    • Betsy says:

I have super-thick wavy hair and I love this too!

    • Abby says:

I love the Bumble & Bumble Hairdresser’s Oil! I also use the Heat/UV primer when I straighten my hair. Makes a world of difference!

  8. Morgan says:

I use the Morroccan oil and I love it. I have very fine, naturally oily hair and it just makes my hair strong and shiny, not oily or weighted down. Also I thought/was told the Light version was for pale( blonde/white) hair because the regular version can tint pale hair.

  9. Chelsay says:

Macadamia Natural Oil Healing Oil is amazing. I also mix that with Klorane Desert Date Leave-In Cream. I have blonde hair that isn’t fine, but isn’t thick by any means and it gets super oily. I use those and I don’t have any oil issues other than what it would be naturally and it keeps my hair super shiny, soft, and moisturized.

  10. A says:

I’ve tried a lot, but the shine serum Victoria’s Secret makes is my favorite. I just run a couple pumps through my damp hair every day. It smells great, too!

  11. kate says:

I swear by Moroccan oil! Another option (if you have thicker hair) is to use coconut oil on your ends.

  12. Erica says:

I have curly hair that’s fairly fine, and I’m a fan of the Nexxus Hydralight leave-in conditioning foam, which I scrunch in post-shower while my hair’s still wet. It’s super-light and absorbs instantly.

  13. KMS says:

Oribe Supershine Moisturizing Cream! I have very thick, color-treated hair that touches the bottom of my shoulder blades and this is hands down the best leave-in I have ever used. While you might be put off by the sticker price ($50), it lasts a long time (1 year with 2/3 hair washes a week) and you cannot beat the quality. It doesn’t weigh down my hair and my hairdresser commented on what good condition my hair was in once I had begun using it. There is a light version of the cream if you have shorter/thinner hair. I cannot recommend the entire Oribe line enough.

    • Helena says:

I heart Oribe. The products are expensive, no doubt about it, but my hair is in the best shape it has been since I was teenager with virgin hair (a long time ago). The blow-dry spray is amazing. It makes my stick-straight hair full and shiny and soft.

  14. Traci says:

My wavy, color treated shoulder length hair & I love Garnier Fructis Sleek leave in conditioner. It is easy on the budget and my must-have hair product.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
