1) My favorite author, Joan Didion, was chosen as the face of Celine’s new ad campaign.  The octogenarian’s fan-girls are pretty excited about it.  Looking to learn more about Ms. Didion?  I suggest Slouching Towards Bethlehem.

2) This Yessica bag from Sole Society, in a pinky-neutral hue, has chic details and a fun, yet functional, style.

3) I thought this infographic about the world’s oldest trees was interesting.

4) I love long necklaces.  This lengthy disc necklace from Nordstrom is chic and affordable.  I positively adore this y-shaped lariat necklace from Dogeared (it’s awesome). This long, bar-station necklace is a sleek choice (also in silver).

5) Dry skin getting you down?  The Beauty Department advises adding a moisture barrier to your daily routine.  My favorite is from Egyptian Magic, use it anywhere your skin needs a pick me up.

6) ASOS has some lovely new items in stock.  This navy trench is perfect for spring and under-$125.  This royal blue dress from Whistles is a versatile choice.  These strappy, cut-out shoes are also a fun choice for under-$50.

7) Mashable has a list of the best phone apps of 2014.  Just ignore the inclusion of Kim Kardashian, and it’s an interesting list.

8) This bright blue coat from J.Crew is gorgeous.  I also love this BB Dakota coat in a salt-and-pepper ombre; I can’t believe it’s under-$100.

9) Things that I will not be doing: Moving to Minnesota so that I can live in a yurt.  Getting up at 3:00AM to ensure I don’t die of hypothermia does not sound like a stellar living arrangement.

10) This Marc Jacobs bag is one of the most beautiful handbags that I have ever seen.

11) California’s controversial ban on the production and sale of foie gras was overturned this week.  I never cared for foie, but this is an interesting case study on how special interest groups advance an agenda.

12) Love the look of a layered necklace but clueless about how to layer them properly?  Penny Pincher Fashion has a helpful tutorial with great visuals.  Looking for reasonably priced, well-made necklaces?  Baublebar is a great place to start.

  1. Tara F. says:

Frost build-up on the toilet seat? Definitely not for everyone.

  2. I have recently become a huge fan of MJ bags. I love how little branding they have and how sleek and timeless they are. Not quite as pretty as BV or Nancy Gonzales but in the same vein for like half the price.

W/r/t foie gras and special interests I would suggest reading this:
    https://www.seriouseats.com/2010/12/the-physiology-of-foie-why-foie-gras-is-not-u.html
Like with all meat I think it’s important to push for ethical treatment (and I advocate buying local and organic as well), but the vilification of foie gras produced in the US (where we have much less demand) as worse than other meat we eat regularly seems really disingenuous.

    • SarahT says:

Thanks for sharing the article about foie gras. I specifically recall reading it went it originally came out because it actually swayed a number of friends who were previously anti-foie.

  3. VA says:

I’m sorry to be That Person, but since we snarked on Joanna Goddard for her fake Hamlet quote… I’m pretty sure that quote is from the TV show “Once Upon a Time”, not the book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.”

    • Belle says:

Oh, thanks. I’ve never read Alice. I used to check all the quotes because it was a pet peeve of mine, but thanks to all of these websites that reprint the incorrect quotes, it’s practically impossible to check. Thanks for clearing that up.

  4. Steph says:

I was eyeing that Dogeared necklace for awhile, and bought it during the Nordstrom sale. Disappointingly, the hanging bar at the end is pointy and moderately sharp, like a knitting needle, so I ended up returning it.

I ended up getting this one instead (only comes in silver, but same price point): https://www.dogeared.com/balance-bar-y-necklace%2C-sterling-silver%2C-28-inch/V1SS000211298.html#prefn1=chain-length&prefv1=20%22+-+30%22&start=5

  5. Joules says:

The Joan Didion thing is interesting. I really like that they chose an non-model, elderly, literary figure. I also read the article they linked to from 1961 in Vogue on Self Respect. Definitely worth a read, thanks for sharing!

  6. Kate says:

I live in New England and fight the dry skin battle every winter. I’ve come to swear by Nourish Organic Argan Oil Balm. It’s $20 online or at Whole Foods (I’m sure other retailers sell it, too). I apply it before my moisturizers both in the morning and night. It has made a huge difference!

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
