Belle’s Weekly Reading: Bonus Edition

May 20, 2014

Yesterday, I found some many interesting articles on the web that I realized I had enough for two Weekly Reading columns.  So I figured, why not?

Recently, I took three days when I didn’t talk to anyone on the phone, respond to any texts or turn on my computer.  It was great.  I love the Interwebs and technology, but sometimes you forget that we once lived without any of these things.  It was kind of liberating to just experience what was happening around me  for a change.

***

1) MTV (yes, that MTV) conducted a comprehensive study on millennials and race that examines attitudes, tolerance, bias and diversity from the perspective of the rising generation.  Slate has a summary that outlines how nearly 3/4 of respondents believe their generation is “post-racial,” but that 80-percent aren’t comfortable talking about race.

The Slate analysis concludes, “The irony of this survey [is]: A generation that hates racism but chooses color blindness is a generation that, through its neglect, comes to perpetuate it.” Fascinating.

2) I was about to give up on a small end table for my “study chair” after the fourth thrift store visit, but then I found this accordion-style table at Urban Outfitters and had to have it.

3) Have some time to kill?  The Atlantic has a list of 2013’s 100 Best Non-Fiction Pieces to keep you busy, entertained and informed until the 2014 list comes out next May.

4) Three words: Marchesa Wedding Gown.

5) One of the most talked about articles on Buzzfeed right now is a piece about the opening of the 9/11 museum written by the sister of a woman killed in the WTC attack.  It’s heartbreaking, well-written and thought-provoking.

6) I can’t decide how I feel about this navy dress from H&M.  I kind of love the open sides and back, but then I start thinking about bra options and my train of thought goes sideways.

7) The tale of Huguette Clark is as tragic as it is riveting.  The latest article on the life of the billionaire recluse gives you a peek inside the mansions she eschewed to spend her golden years in a New York City hospital.

8) Mizhattan takes on these $47 Seychelles metallic and taupe sandals in her weekly styling challenge.  Everything about the post is awesome.

9) Who What Wear has an article on the 9 current trends that have staying power.  I completely agree about black and white blouses, especially with beauties like this 3.1 Phillip Lim Splatter Top out there.

10) Walking around in the heat, in a dress has caused some mild inner thigh chafing.  Both painful and somewhat embarrassing.  A friend recommend this TRISLIDE anti-chafe spray that cyclists use, and it’s a lifesaver.

Thanks for the link to Trislide. I have been running for a few years but had my first serious chafing incident last night. I knew it would be bad while I was running, but that did not prepare me for the feeling of fire when I got in the shower afterward. I picked my outfit for today entirely on what would not rub my inner thighs.

  2. Eliz says:

The 9.11 piece was haunting. Thank you for sharing it.

  3. Phoebe says:

I just bought two of the Urban Outfitters accordion side tables to use as nightstands in my new apartment, and I LOVE them. I feel like they would go with so many different decorating styles, depending on what you pair them with.

  4. Anna says:

Please tell me you’re not on board with jumpsuits sticking around? Cuz that’s a trend a trend that needs to go away yesterday.

  5. LP says:

Belle, you’ve previously recommended Monistat Anti-Chafing Gel. Do you prefer the Trislide now? Why the change?

  6. Ashley says:

I cannot get enough of the story about Huguette Clark. I completely agree with your assessment that it is “as tragic as it is riveting”. I started reading about her and her story two years ago and I’ve been hooked since.

    • Belle says:

It’s crazy that her father and family were from my home town. I never thought anyone would care about them except Butte people, but here we are.

  7. Meghan says:

I have that UO table! It’s sturdy and looks totally designer. I always get compliments on it. Love the choice!

  8. ~m says:

If I have an event in the tropical weather (not nearly as pleasant as it sounds) or if I’m going to be walking a long distance in a skirt, I like to wear tennis shorts. You’d think they would add too much bulk or heat. A really body con dress wouldn’t work and it adds one degree in temperature, but the comfort more than makes up for it.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
