Happy Hour: Your Julep Awaits

May 1, 2014

This Saturday, for the first time since 1988, I will not be watching the Kentucky Derby.  Instead, I will be on a religious retreat.  I know it’s good for my spiritual health, but I am loathe to break such a streak.  However, you can help me out by eating Derby Pie and drinking Juleps in my honor.

While the mint julep is traditional, why not branch out?  There are blackberry-mint juleps, rhubarb-mint juleps and pineapple-mint juleps,  There are even cherry juleps and peach juleps.  And if you’re prefer to chow down on this festive favorite, why not make some mint julep brownies?

WHBM Sleeveless Dot Print Dress ($170)

This weekend is the Derby, but it is also Gold Cup, Virginia’s steeplechase races.  To channel your inner Julia Roberts, try this dotted sundress ala “Pretty Woman.”  And if you like dots, this shirtsleeve navy and red dress from Modcloth.

I also found this fun floral dress from Warehouse.  You could also go bright with this yellow dress from ASOS.  Boden is also a good place to look for spring/summer dresses.  I like this tropical floral print (also in tall sizes) and this breezy eyelet dress that comes in white, navy and yellow.

Prefer something under-$75?  Try this white dress from BB Dakota or this striped Anne Klein with a swingy skirt.

Plus-size?  Try this boho floral-print sundress from Taylor or this short-sleeve cotton wrap dress.  Petite? This black and white halter dress from Asos is really cute.  I also like yellow, citrus-print dress from Ann Taylor.

Lastly, I hear that it is going to be very muddy at Gold Cup this year thanks to several days of rain.  My shoes of choice for such conditions?  Cute Wellies.  I like these high-gloss raspberry-colored ones from Hunter and these pale mint ones from Asos.  And if you’re afraid of being too hot in knee-high boots, grab some anti-chafe stick and baby powder to keep things dry and cool.

Darn, I wish you had posted this last week. I’m going to a party Saturday and am still dress less. I’m new to this blog. What’s your position on wearing white before Memorial Day? I’m guessing based on your derby dress picks, you think it’s okay.

Jules wellies are my faves: https://bluemopheads.blogspot.com/2014/04/joules-wellies.html

I believe that white can be worn all year. All white is tough to pull off, but with thought it can be done. White shoes are still a summer thing for me, though.

  2. I fell in love with the citrus ann taylor dress…not that that kind of love has never happened before..but this dress is just screaming summer!! Love it. I will be watching the derby, primarily for all the “fashion” that goes on.. 🙂

Greetings Belle – I lived in Lexington, KY for about a year an a half, and got the recipe for Kentucky (a.k.a. Derby) Pie. It’s simple to make, travels well, and always a hit 🙂

    Great roundup!

The derby pie looks sinfully good. I’m a big fan of shoefly and mince meat pies, so this looks right up my ally.
