Mining the Sales for Fall Pieces

Aug 8, 2012

As we move into the late summer, it’s time to start thinking about fall fashions.  While most of the cold-weather pieces are just coming in, you can mine current sales to stock up on autumn pieces at lower prices.  Here are some great basics and fun accessories to ready your closet for the next season.

Bracelets: Ann Taylor Deco Cuff ($40) and Lucite Hinge Cuff ($20) Dress: Chinti Parker T-Shirt Dress ($55) Coat: Collection Icon Trench ($238) Shoes: Ivanka Amoros Pump ($65) and Ivanka Trump Cleor Pump ($65) Bag: Urban Expressions Chelsea Clutch ($44) Top: Madewell Sunshade Blouse ($50) Necklace: Color Pop Chain ($17) Dress: Mango Combo Dress ($55)

Polyvore Set Here.

These pieces represent some of my favorite fall basics: a cool cuff bracelet, a comfortable dress to wear with a scarf, tights and boots, a chic trench, a combo dress for work and play.  So before you rush out to buy the newest pieces at retail prices, take a moment to mine the sale and look for pieces that could work for the end of summer and the fall.

One last thing, I own this trench, and I love it.  The fabric is a great weight.  The shape is lovely.  And unlike so many J.CREW pieces, it isn’t vanity-sized.  It’s priced at $238, but if you use the promo code SHOPNOW, you can save another 30% through 8/9 (Sorry, the sale ended last night. Darn.)  And if you sign up for eBates, you’ll also earn 3% cash back.

Shopping sales is a skill, because it takes will power to resist buying pieces that are too trendy, can’t be worn into the next season or don’t flatter your figure.  So stick with good basics, trendy/statement accessories (if they’re a good price) and classic styles.

Another great all-season trench is this one (https://bananarepublic.gap.com/browse/product.do?cid=40924&vid=1&pid=407741&scid=407741012) from Banana Republic. It comes in petite, regular, and tall sizes, and is in general kind of perfect. If you're lucky, you can find it on a day that Banana is offering 20-40% off full price styles (like today until midnight :).

  2. Shopping for the next season pre-season is one of my favorites. Some retailers even put out stuff from last winter season on the shelf/online shop around that time and you can get this stuff on super low discounts. I've been lusting after a cap for a while but was never able to find one that didn't look cheap but didn't break the bank. Finally, this summer I scored one from last year at 70% off.

I love all the muted tones in this set. The blouse is especially lovely.

Can anyone recommend a trenchcoat that has a hood? Been trying to find one for years!

  5. This is so on point. I love scouring the sale racks and finding pieces for next season or the past season at a steep discount. Even if its a summer piece and its already August, like the tank top I snagged for $10 at Ann Taylor last week off the sale rack, I get to wear it for a bit now then it's new again next summer!

FYI on that lovely J. Crew trench coat: I just stopped by the Georgetown store to look at it, and it's on sale there for $149.99. (I bought it on the spot, of course.) The saleslady couldn't (wouldn't?) tell me how long the sale will last, and they have limited sizes. But if they don't have your size they'll ship it to you at no extra charge, like they usually do.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

The Range: Spring Blouses for Work (or Zoom)

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.
