Some Color Palettes for Spring 2012

Mar 7, 2012

Coral & Purple: Sweater ($73), Scarf ($75) Tangerine & Fucshia: Sweater ($40), Skirt ($155)  Navy & Kelly Green: Belt ($28), Dress ($49 UK) Yellow & Grey: Dress ($230 UK) Aqua & Red: Cardigan similar ($40), Jeans ($88) All White: Blouse ($450), Skirt ($90)

Yesterday, I mentioned how much I love dark green and yellow together.  I prefer to wear solids, and the best way to make solids more stylish is to mix together interesting color combinations.  The palettes above are some of my favorites for spring 2012.

The graphic is fairly self-explanatory, so I’m not going to belabor the point further.  In summary, color is good, interesting color combinations are better.  If you have questions, feel free to leave them in the comments.

I've always found Academichic's color tutorial a nice place to look when stumped, too.

  2. L says:

This is so basic and so perfect. Goodwork!

  3. Ms. B says:

I agree with L. When changing seasons best investments are the ones that are on trend in color, but classic in cut. These are no miss no matter where you are heading.

  4. C. says:

This is awesome. I like how you've made some of these more “out there” combinations look wearable by using familiar, relatable pieces.

Obviously this is a long way off, but color examples for other seasons would be wonderful!

  5. SarahT says:

Great post! Will definitely keep these combos in mind as I'm adding to my spring/summer wardrobe!

  6. Erica says:

I love these ideas! And definitely on point for this season!

  7. Shannon says:

What's cracking me up is that all of these combos were popular wedding color schemes in the last few years. Who knew wedding planning was so fashion-forward?

  8. Ellie says:

Shannon- I was thinking the same thing! Although I never jumped on the aqua and red combo…

  9. Ellie says:

Belle, I need your help on colored denim!! I'm loving it on models but worried about how to translate it into my weekend wardrobe… what colors are the most flattering? best to start out with? Thanks!

  10. Bec says:

Belle I love your style posts, in recruitment I find i also need to find a happy balance between suits and colorful pieces. The only thing is I'm based in the southern hemisphere and we're heading into winter (already!) do you have any suggestions for interpreting the new trends for a colder climate?

  11. Katherine says:

Oooh, this post is so pretty.

  12. Amelia says:

Elie, check out the blog “kendi everyday”. She wears quite a bit of coloured denim and styles it very beautifully (albeit, casually).

Love this graphic! This week's weather makes me feel ready for spring.

The “all white” combo reminded me of this picture from Sartorialist that is one of my all-time favorites:

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
