A Better Way to Clean Your Makeup Brushes

Aug 25, 2011

Last week, another blogger encouraged me to watch Michelle Phan’s YouTube beauty and makeup tutorials.  I’m not a huge fan of video blogs in general, (I studied broadcasting so the jumpy cuts and shaky camera work gives me nightmares) but there are a few out there who do a great job and Michelle is definitely one of them.

Imagine my surprise, however, when I watched her video on how to wash you makeup brushes and found out I’ve been doing it all wrong.  (Bad, Belle, bad.)  I tried her method last night, and I am completely converted.  I even ordered a set of brush guards like the ones she uses in the video.

If you’re looking to perfectly clean your brushes and banish bacteria, dirt and oil from your face, check out this video and Michelle’s YouTube channel.  You will be glad you did.

I looked through her archives, and found nothing, but I'm curious: does anyone know if this works with synthetic brushes? Logic says no, and I'm not about to test it and end up with a greasy slick brush.

Belle, I had no idea I was cleaning my brushes improperly! I am so grossed out thinking about all that bacteria going right back onto my skin. Thank you for posting this. I too am now a convert.

Thanks for posting this! I'm new to makeup and have already ruined two brush sets. After washing them I ended up with useless brushes because I'd end up with brush hairs all over my face. I thought it was because I wasn't buying nice enough brushes. But after watching this, I think it's because the way I stored them caused water to get into the glue. Very good tips.

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The Mondays: March 18, 2024

This weekend was a tricky one. The warm weather and bright sunshine of last weekend disappeared in a flurry of wet snow trapping our very active 18-month-old in the house with us. Plus, our babysitter cancelled, so neither of us feels ready for the week ahead. But in between making mac-and-cheese and watching Aristocats for […]
