How to Stave of Dry Skin

Sep 29, 2010

As the humidity dissipates, my usually oil skin begins cracking like a dry river bed.  First, my heels start to callous.  Then, my lips become chapped.  And slowly but surely, all moisture in my body disappears until I’m a shriveled shell of my formerly moisturized self.  To maintain glowing skin in the face of central heating, chilly breezes and dry indoor air, you need to have an army of beauty products.  Here are some of my favorites.

Clarisonic Mia (Sephora, $149)

Before you moisturize, you have to exfoliate.  The Clarisonic is a miracle product, and every woman should own one.

Lush Turkish Delight Body Polish ($30)

Unfortunately, diligence is not one of my virtues so developing a routine is difficult for me.  I almost never remember to apply body lotion, and even if I did remember, I’m too busy in the morning to find the time.  Luckily, Lush has created  product that you can apply in the shower for the softest skin you have ever had in your entire life.

No joke, this stuff is incredible.  So incredible that I am willing to overlook the fact that it smells like roses.  When the commercials say “touchably soft,” this is what they are talking about.

Aquaphor (Drugstore.com, $6)

I’ve tried every lotion, foot creme and foot soak ever created, and Aquaphor is still the only product that keeps my heels from looking like an elephant’s knee caps.  It’s also great under the eyes for a little extra moisture when you need it.

Rosebud Salve (Sephora, $6)

Last year, when I posted about the glories of Rosebud Salve, several of you mentioned how much you hate using lip balm from a tin.  And now, your prayers have been answered.  Rosebud Salve now comes in a tube, hoorah!

Bobbi Brown Extra Moisturizing Balm (Sephora, $85)

Every now and again, my skin will get so dry that it will start to peel off in sheets.  This has happened three times in the last five years, and it is not cool.  And when the peeling starts, this is the only product that makes it stop.  So if your epidermis requires emergency intervention, this is the product for you.

Thanks for the heads-up about Rosebud Salve in a tube! Fantastic news. 🙂

  3. Daniela says:

Wait, which one would you recommend as a facial moisturizer? I have the same problem-I got little random spots where the skin just flakes off.

How does that Clarisonic thing work?? Looks intriguing.

Wow, I can barely contain my excitement over the rosebud salve tubes…Sephora, here I come! Thanks for the heads up, Belle.

Esther, the Clarisonic is a rotating brush that helps gently exfoliate your skin during cleansing. It's got a timer so you know how long to stay in each zone. It is one of the best purchases I have ever made, and I still feel that way after having used it for 2.5 years. I have made converts of most of my female friends, too. And, as an added bonus I think I use less cleanser but get better results.

I think I need that Turkish Delight body balm. Rose is my latest fragrance obsession and I never remember the body lotion either – no time as a mom who works f/t much less one who's not very consistent w/ beauty routines either. The more I can do in the shower the better.

Thank you for this life-saving post. My skin is already cracking and it's not even cold!!

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
