The Find: A Great Layering Sweater

Several years ago, I was wearing a wool sweater when my neck swole up like one of those middle-aged men who owns every muscle-building supplement money can buy but has never eaten a vegetable that wasn’t fried. Later in life allergies are so fun. So now, I prefer cotton sweaters, but so many are thin, poorly made and don’t hold shape, so I get excited when I find a great one.

This sweater from One Grey Day feels incredibly soft. I took it out of the package and was genuinely stunned by the smooth, velvety texture. It also has this incredibly relaxed look, more sweatshirt than sweater. I layer it under blazers to dress it up or wear it with sweatpants at home, it really works for both looks.

The most impressive thing about this sweater is the weight. So many sweaters right now are so thin that they’re practically see through or so chunky and heavy that they’re not layerable or wearable outside of deep winter. This one is a great middle weight, it feels luxe but not heavy. I can’t report on pilling since it’s a newer piece, but I’ll report back if I notice a problem.

The sweater comes in a shocking number of colors. I own the pale grey, but I bought the white shortly after it arrived because I’m hoping it’ll look like a dressy t-shirt under other layers.

At $158, this sweater isn’t cheap, but it isn’t break the bank expensive either. I’ve paid more for less. It is 40% viscose, which I know is a turn off for many. My feeling on synthetics is that just because something is 100% wool or cotton doesn’t mean it’s well made. I just had a collar separate from a cashmere sweater last week and who hasn’t picked up a pure cotton t-shirt that was as thin as toilet tissue. This is a piece that feels quality despite its composition.
