The Range: Mom Bags for Summer

Jun 10, 2026

And we’re back in the land of the living. It took a few days after my spontaneous vertigo episode to want to look at a computer again. So let’s get back to it with a discussion about “Mom Bags” for summer.

Several years ago, I started going purse free. I bought a pocket-sized wallet and bid adieu to carrying a purse every day. Then, I had a baby. The diaper bag became my purse. And now that Sloane is living that diaper life behind, I would like to return to my fancy free life. The trouble is, it’s summer.

The pool beckons. The park with its wet slides, muddy paths, and messy snacks has arrived. And Sloane is doing more costume changes between 8:00AM and 8:00PM than the entire cast of Schmigadoon. So I need a Mom Bag. Here are the ones I’ve purchased and the ones I’m considering, because if I’m going back to that tote bag life, I’m going to have options.

Hey, remember when I created an entire blog based on my hatred for Crocs, the La Pliage bag and Vera Bradley? Well, life will make a liar of you if you let it. But, in my defense, this bag (quilted though she may be) isn’t Vera…she’s Rachel. Rachel Antonoff to be exact.

The brand gifted this to me in November, and she’s so ugly, she’s cute (also in a caviar print). I love the multi-colored snakes, because it has low-key Cool Mom vibes. The bag is flipping enormous. And you can wash her. I carry all of Sloane’s school stuff in this when I need to bring new clothes, new nap things, more snack, etc. This tote says, “Yes, this is the same sweater I wore to drop off yesterday, but look at my bag!”

Need a work bag that can also be a Mom Bag? Cuyana has a lot of great options. I like this vertical tote and their signature Easy Tote. Both give you space for a laptop and more.

I also love that you can buy inserts to create better storage. The leather feels incredible, and they wear like iron. I bought my first Cuyana tote in 2015 and it still looks great. Same with the weekender I bought that same year.

Every Mom at my pool loves a Bog Bag, but it’s just not for me. I need more. This bag is known as The Shore Thing, and boy, is it ever. It holds multiple rolled up towels, books, sunscreen, snacks, you name it. Also, the mesh is rubber, so it doesn’t get wet and you can shake the sand right out. Long drop, so it’s easy to carry.

The LL Bean Boat and Tote is a classic, but it’s just not for me. I own one (doesn’t everybody?), but when I spotted this Lululemon tote, I realized it is just a better version of the classic. It has exterior pockets, a rigid bottom, a laptop sleeve and it’s waterproof. Think of it as one summer Mom Bag to rule them all. Also comes in navy.

So Moms, Aunties, and Single Ladies with Things to Schlepp, what bag are you rocking this summer?

Antonoff link goes to a leather card case. Very interested in the caviar print!

I need a mid-size Mom Bag (but as a G cup I hate fanny packs and cross body bags) that’s ideally washable/water resistant, if anyone has any recommendations.

That bag is weird, and I love it. I am that basic woman with a black le pliage back, but I’m trying to embrace being more weird. My le pliage is great, but those snakes are so fun!! That designer is new to me, and she may be my new Weird Girl inspo.

Beis makes a backpack for kids and I use that when on adventures (hike, playground, museum, etc.) with my 4 and 6 year old. If I need to carry more, I’ll use a Cotopaxi that also doubles as a camp backpack for my 6 yr old. They aren’t the most fashionable, but I just can’t do a tote bag while chasing two kids.

Pool is the simple modern version of a bog bag.

Currently using my Baggu Cargo Crossbody (medium) as my purse/diaper bag. It holds a ton, has some zip pockets, and doesn’t scream “I’m a mom.” Very happy with it!
