Ask the Editor: Who Influences You? Pt. 1

Jun 3, 2025

From the DMs: You’ve always influenced me. My closet is filled with Belle’s favorites. Who influences you? What do you buy?

My Sister Made Me Buy It // No one convinces me to buy as many things as Sarah and Missy do. Their content really feels like a group chat with your girlfriend chiming in to tell you about this great thing. Also, an item that they promoted in March doesn’t disappear forever by April. They’ll wear those sandals again, that dress again, promote the same sheet mask 42x. It’s very much how regular people behave.

Yes, they consume more than you do. They consume more than I do. But they consume it to try it, to kick the tires, to figure out if it’s worth it. They don’t grab something off the shelf and immediately think about selling it; they think about using it first. That’s a key difference.

Here are four things that Sarah and Missy sold me on:

  1. Dior Forever Glow Star Filter // In November 2024, I bought this. Then, I went on a business trip. Women kept asking me what skincare I was using. It wasn’t skincare, it was this glowy, filtery primer. I adore it. Forever re-buy.
  2. Spanx Air Essentials Dress // I was so skeptical of the AirEssentials line. It was so heavily hyped. And that’s usually a recipe for disaster. But Sarah wore this dress, and then wore it again, and 678 more times, and I was sold. I own two now.
  3. Touchland Hand Sanitizer // These fantastic hand sanitizers are the only ones I can get my toddler to use. Spritz on, rub in, pray she stops eating snacks off of the floor. They smell great, fit in the smallest purse or in your pocket, and make a great gift.
  4. J.Crew Palermo Dress // This dress is the most recent thing the sisters sold me. I needed a fun, slightly sexy, easy summer dress. The kind of thing I can wear with a high heel sandal for dinner or with a sneaker and a jean jacket for a barbecue. Love the red. Love the print. Style flatters and accentuates most body types.

What else have Sarah and Missy sold me? So many things, and so many different kinds of things.

Sarah converted me to horizontal legal pads. Very controversial pick at my firm.

I’ll probably buy this romper because I love a wide stripe.

I don’t cook much, but this Staub spoon/spatula combo is the best.

They also convinced me to eat deli sandwiches, which is something I rarely did before. (BLT with pickles on white.)

Bottom Line, I wanted to answer this question in parts, and there was no one else who could be the first pick. Check back later to see my other picks.

  1. Sarah says:

Lawyer here. Intrigued but also a little upset by the horizontal legal pad. Tell me more!

    • Belle says:

I divide the page in half, so I get twice the notes on one page. It’s nice. I’ll post to instagram

  2. egal says:

Lawyer here, too. I am in love with the horizontal legal pad!!

  3. Clara says:

I have that Old Navy romper and it’s so comfortable and flattering.

  4. jessica says:

How do you pick the color for the Dior filter? Should it match your skin or be darker? lighter?

    • Juliane says:

I spent way too much time trying to find one of those makeup shade converters to pick the Dior filter coloring. Finally opted to stop in an actual store and product test.
I use Saie slip tint in 3 and Armani Luminous Silk in 4.25. The Dior filter 1 is perfect. Hope this helps!

    • Belle says:

Mine matches. I used the Sephora shade finder.
