The Range: Golfing Attire

May 14, 2025

Last year, against my better judgment, we joined a country club. I did it for the pool. Kyle did it for the ability to play golf multiple times per week. Now, I have to learn to golf.

20+ years in politics and I never learned the game, but my two-year-old loves nothing more than to ride in the cart, and run down the fairway, and hold the flag for her Dad. So I guess I’m golfing. But finding golfing attire that isn’t bright fuchsia, electric aqua, zebra printed, or baby pink is a challenge. Here are a few places to find stylish outfits to wear on the links.

Early on, I realized that most of the cute tennis outfits currently trending on social media are great for golf. Making Tuckernuck’s TNuck Sport line perfect for this endeavor. This Alcott golf dress caught my eye. This snap-necked pullover is a must even if you don’t play golf. And I would not sleep on these scallop trim shorts, they sell out every summer.

Calia is the Carrie Underwood activewear line from Dick’s. It’s still pretty rainy in the Pacific Northwest, so I bought these cute cargo joggers off the sale rack. I also love this simple polo dress. The line is sized up to 3X, and they also have some really cute workout clothes.

Byrdie Golf is the golf attire for the discerning lady about town. Totally cute with ensembles that look just as good on the course as they do in the clubhouse, I aspire to be good enough at golf that I feel comfortable dressing up to play. This Montauk dress is a stunner. I also love their collared Hayden dress. And, of course, I bought myself a hat.

Do you golf or play tennis? If so, where do you buy your clothes?

  1. Athleta’s tennis skirts and dresses are perfect for public courses. If you’re at a private course, you’re expected to wear a mockneck or collar, so some of the strappy tennis dresses don’t work. I have this in 3 colors: https://athleta.gap.com/browse/product.do?pid=662441002&vid=1&searchText=golf#pdp-page-content # pdp-page-content

Athleta also makes golf skorts, which usually have a handy interior pocket for stashing balls.

I play tennis! Would love to know favs for tennis dresses especially those for small chested women who still need support. (Thanks breastfeeding!) I have an outdoor voices dress, but it’s really not tight enough on the top for me, and if I sized down it would not cover my bum.

Thank for highlighting that golf and tennis outfits can be interchangeable, I didn’t realize that golf attire for women includes the built in shorts.

Renwick makes some nice stuff; a lot of it airs on the pinky and cute, but they do have some nice basic pieces.

Love this topic! The Tuckernuck stuff is fabulous, I always get compliements on my scalloped-edge shorts. Some other brands I like are Foray Golf, Renwick Sport and Rhone. Old Navy and Athleta activewear are always go-tos, especially their skirts. I’ve also tried the Mcade brand and was sad when the items arrived and just didn’t fit me right–great materials and some “cool” colors/cuts, but a bit too tight/revealing for my club.

G/Fore is super! Pricey, but great quality and can often be found at T.J. Maxx/Marshall’s/Sierra at steep discounts.

  6. Courtney says:

I don’t play golf but recently discovered during a recent trip to South America that a golf dress is great for travel to hot weather destinations. Looks cute, doesn’t take up much room and mine didn’t wrinkle.

  7. Jody says:

I adore the Peter Millar woman’s golf skirts & polos. The polos breathe so well & are super light for layering, if a collar is required. A little pricey, but excellent quality. I also see them at TJ Maxx occasionally!

  8. Kris says:

Life-long golfer here. Women’s golf attire is traditionally BLEAK and makes me look 30 years older than I am. I dig Athleta’s tee-time skort with a branded golf shirt from the course I’m playing. I don’t look especially good in a golf polo, but the pro shop staff appreciate the patronage and that can help your family get better teetimes. You can also find quality women’s golf wear at TJ Maxx and Ross. I don’t think it sells very wee ant retail establishments and always ends up on clearance. Don’t forget you need serious pockets. Also, if you’re lining up a putt you might need more coverage than the typical tennis undies provide.

I am very excited to see your golf recs! I love golfing but the women’s clothes can have the WORST patterns and colors. Don’t get me started on the shoes.

My boyfriend and I golf and we only ever scramble when we play together. It’s the best way to make it a team sport and you spend more time with each other and less on separate sides of the fairway. It’s also very fun when we get to take my drive 🙂

  10. Tess says:

New golfer here! I have been enjoying Athleta’s skorts and golf tanks. Lululemon also offers some cute golf polos and skorts, but their dresses trend more to tennis. Lilly Pulitzer has some more flamboyant offerings but still has some classic looks. Bad Birdie has some fun and funky styles but I haven’t purchased from them yet.

  11. Kristen says:

Im a tennis player and love the brand LIJA. They have some dedicated golf clothes, but even the tennis skirts have a range of lengths

  12. HJB says:

I have been saying to my husband for years; “I will never love golf as much as you want me to love golf” BUT I do love a ride-a-long where I drive the cart so I can park myself in the shade, with a Bootleg, and I sometimes even take a swing.
Clothing: make sure your club doesn’t require a collar. Ours does. Also, check out your club’s pro shop! We have a fantastic buyer at ours with a great selection, at cost.

  13. Jennifer says:

I played golf for a couple of summers during graduate school because my boyfriend was a golfer. We paid public course fees in a low-cost-of-living area. I can’t remember what I wore, except for a visor, because I don’t like hats, and sunglasses flew off my face when I hit the ball. I took a few lessons to master the basics. I also prioritized enjoying my time on the course while doing my best on each hole. It was such an enjoyable way to leave the frustration of classes and my dissertation behind. I miss it, and unfortunately, I never found anyone else who was interested or could play without throwing a temper tantrum when they missed a shot. Wear what is required and comfortable, and enjoy the time in the sun (or clouds given your climate).

  14. Tina says:

I play tennis and love Popflex active skorts and dresses for that – they can be a bit Disney princess sometimes, but I am here for it.
