The Find: A Vibrant Summer Dress

May 1, 2025

This weekend, the temperature in the Pacific Northwest finally started to climb. I am so grateful. My summer wardrobe is just midi and maxi dresses. Cute enough to wear out of the house. Warm enough to wear in my office all day. And this dress from Quince caught my eye.

This Cotton Poplin Tiered dress is perfectly breezy and relaxed. It comes in 13 colors, but I think the bright colors, like this gorgeous vermillion, are the best options for summer. And did I mention it has pockets? It’s a great dress for work, errands, lunch, or the park (yes, I will climb a jungle gym in this dress).

I am having mine hemmed from a maxi to a midi length because it feels more summery. The dress was $69, and the hemming will be $24 after tip. So for under-$100, I will have a dress in the color I want and length I want that’s perfect for warm weather.

The dress is also available in sizes 1x-3x in some colors, including the vermillion.

I have a similar style dress in linen from Boden that I love (although sold out in my size and colors this year, so will be adding a duplicate next year) and then ordered a similar version in a fun print from Anthropologie for this summer (although TBD if the cotton is as comfortable as the linen).

I own this dress – in this color – and have only worn it twice. Maybe it’s just me, but the volume of the dress (the cotton doesn’t drape very well, it kind of stands out from the body) makes it feels awfully fancy. Even with white sneakers or flat sandals. I’ve worn it on vacation to dinner, and home to a Sunday brunch.

I have four of this dress, plus a few more of the Anthropologie Somerset for which it is a pretty near dupe. I live in these dresses in the summer when not at work.

In general, the quality has been about the same for a big price difference. The Somerset specializes in fun patterns, while the Quince version is mostly solid colors. (Although I do really like the new “romantic stems” Quince pattern.) I’ve found that the Somerset fabric is sometimes nicer; at least one of my Somersets is significantly softer than the Quince version (but Quince’s crisp cotton is totally fine). Quince has a tiny snap on the bodice, which is much more functional to keep it closed than the Somerset’s tiny hook. Quince’s version runs a tiny bit smaller, so I sized up.

The Quince dress is a dupe of the Anthropologie Somerset dress, if you want more print/color/fabric options, albeit at a higher price point.

Would you please suggest a couple of ways to style this dress?

  6. KL says:

Wait, are you supposed to tip for alterations?! I never have (and being petite and picky, I’ve had a lot of alterations done over the years).

    • Ash says:

I’ve never tipped, and neither has my mom/sister. Maybe it’s a regional thing?

      • Mary says:

Me either–that is a service where the service provider gets to fully set the price. I have always operated under the mindset that, as such, the price covers the cost+time adequately.

        • Belle says:

Only if they own the shop. My shop is owned by a dry cleaner, so the alterations person is an hourly employee.

    • Belle says:

I tip because the person at my shop doesn’t own it.

  7. Did you have it hemmed from the bottom up? Or did you have the tiers adjusted so they remain uniform to each other?

  8. E says:

FYI they just (this week?) released this in a maternity fit too!

  9. Carolyn says:

I have this one in Navy! I never thought of shortening but I think that’s a great idea and would definitely make it a little less dressy (and cooler here in GA). I also own a Somerset. I like the Quince better – the bodice fits me better and the snap is in a good spot for me. The Somerset is too lowcut, I have to wear a cami with it (and/or get the clasp adjusted).

Would also love to see this styled a few ways!

I sized up so I could have more room in the bust and my on-call alterations lady (my mom) added a second snap to avoid gaping — and found black snaps so they blend in very nicely.
