In 2024, I rediscovered wearing color. At the end of the year, I bought several pieces in shades of yellow and it really brightened up the winter blahs. So here are a few pieces in brighter hues.
01. Anthropologie Batwing Blouse // I love this top for a few reasons: 1) it’s a cool cut, 2) the print is fun, and 3) the mustard works in spring, summer or fall. The bohemian feels is really nice with a pair of wide leg jeans or white shorts. And if mustard isn’t your hue, there are three more to choose from.
02. Tuckernuck Blakely Dress // I bought this off-the-shoulder dress for a holiday party and wore it three times in December. Every time I wore it it drew so many compliments. It’s a cool shape, the bell skirt is flattering on the hips, and it’s short, but not too short for those of us over 40. Also comes in black and pale blue. It’s perfect for weddings, date nights, everything.
Love this color but don’t need a cocktail dress? This very fun, casual sweater from Nordstrom is fab.
03. Gola Suede Sneakers // I bought my daughter these Cat & Jack sneakers, and every time she wore them, I kept thinking how cute they were. So when I spotted these Gola sneakers, I had to buy them. They really spruce up a pair of jeans or a pair of joggers. And they feel very fashion forward, which is great when you often feel like a Mom whose style has taken a hit.
You can find suede sneakers in a lot of colors: try them in red, green, or pink. So find the color that’s for you and give them a try for spring.
04. Oryany Flap Satchel // This crossbody bag comes in a ton of colors — I think the yellow is the most wearable. I know, hot take. But it wears with navy/blue, gray, white, shades of brown, green, and so many colors. It complements so many looks. Try it with this dark green sweater or this chambray shirt or this white cotton dress.
05. Mango Papallon Cardigan // This textured cardigan is really a fun piece for spring. It’s sold out in every size but small and medium, so if you love it jump on it.
As we go through the run up to spring, I’m going to be pushing color. Neutrals are great, but I need more joy. I also need more compliments (yes, I said it), and color seems to draw them. So I guess this is Capitol Hill Style, now in Technicolor.

the batwing blouse was a real quick -buy-
thank you! i love a mustard hue!
Capital Hill Style in Technicolor – I love it! 🙂 And completely feel you. A couple weeks ago, I was browsing Naadam for new sweaters, and as a 41-year old who has pretty much only worn neutrals for the last decade, I had this sudden compulsion to buy two sweaters in cobalt and tangerine. Totally out of the norm for me, and I almost starting second guessing myself when they arrived, but they bring me a little joy each time I put them on.
I’m on a self-imposed clothes buying ban for January, but I can’t say enough how much I agree with this sentiment! It feels like everything I own is black, white, or blue. Some color would be a welcome change!
