Two weeks ago, I was washing clothes when I noticed how worn some of my basics were looking. Underwear with slightly frayed edges, bras with stretched straps, t-shirts with collars crinkled like bacon. Thus, it’s time to refresh some essentials, go back to basics.
Let’s start with the t-shirts.
Truth be told, I’ve owned so many t-shirt brands, too many. Madewell. Gap. Everlane. Leset. Ingrid & Isabel. But a few months ago, a girlfriend convinced me to give them all up in favor of a tee that you can buy in a three-pack at Target.
Yep. She convinced me to start wearing Hanes t-shirts.
Before you spend $40+ on a t-shirt, ask yourself why you’re overpaying. This <$10 Hanes t-shirt is 100% cotton, primarily sourced from U.S. farms. The materials is slightly thicker than most of the t-shirts on the market.
The shirts are easy to wash on cold; I lay them flat to dry. I haven’t had trouble with shrinking, but it’s always a concern with cotton.
The fit of this tee is more of a classic fit, not relaxed, but not slim cut. It’s the perfect thing for wearing under sweaters and blazers. It also comes in plus-sizes.
If you’re in the market for t-shirts, want cotton, and don’t want to spend a ransom, Hanes might become your new favorite tee.

I buy my white t-shirts from the WalMart craft aisle or Michaels. They are thick, they are cheap, they are durable, and easily replaced!
+1 to the craft aisle!
My $3 100% cotton tank top from Michaels gets worn at least once a week in warmer months as a casual top, swimsuit coverup, or under a sweater/blazer on a zoom call.
You sold me. Which size did you buy? My experience is that I’m about the same size as you.

As a short torso person, I love the more cropped styles at Madewell. But the t-shirt I reach for all the time and pack with every trip is https://vuoriclothing.com/products/womens-energy-tee-black-heather?queryId=f17aff30fdfa084aca9a19c368755b9f&collection=womens-tee-shirts
Great recommendation. Can you post the Target 3-pack link? I can’t seem to find them there. ..
They don’t sell them online. They’re available in store sporadically.
Any recommendations for t-shirts to wear under a more form fitting sweater? Something like the Nadaam orginal crewneck which isn’t tight but the sleeves of a regular t-shirt would make a weird line. I’m not a fan of those Numi undershirts. Thanks!
Sleeveless?
Uniqlo Airism! I trolled Reddit threads for awhile re: Numi/similar $$ shirts and everyone touted the Uniqlo line instead. I now have a nude Airism short sleeve base layer and have worn it under multiple sweaters since buying it a month ago. Heavily rec.
How do you style tees with a higher crew neckline like this with a blazer? In my head, the necklines don’t feel compatible, but I’m not “good” at this.
I prefer v-necks with v-necks. But the way to fake a v-neck balance is with a pendant necklace to pull the eye down.
