Saw It On Social: Rooted

Apr 25, 2024

A few months ago, my husband killed two of my plants. I was out of town for several weeks, and while I was away, he apparently forgot that plants need water to live. So when I returned, my snake plant and my Calamondin tree were both dead, while his braided money tree continued to thrive. Okay, so he just forgot that my plants needed water to survive.

Regardless, I started searching for new plants and as a result, my social media went haywire recommending different plant ordering services.  After reading the reviews, I decided to try Rooted.

Rooted advertises “premium plants shipped straight from our greenhouse to your door.”  From cactus to rubber trees, they seem to have a bit of everything.  They also have subscriptions for serious plant lovers, and tout their 6,000 5-Star reviews.

Ordering from Rooted seemed like a safe bet.  So I spent ~$90 on a Snake Plant.  Then, I waited.  I ordered the plant on March 21 and it didn’t arrive until March 28.  By then, I had already left for Montana, and Kyle was left to do the planting.  However, I had already prepped the pot with the right mix of soil, drainage rocks, etc., so everything should have been fine.

When Kyle opened the box to plant the new Snake plant, he immediately noticed that the plant was in rough shape.  About 30% of the fronds were droopy or bent, but he planted it and hoped for the best.

When I returned 12 days later, the plant looked awful.  Several fronds were squishy and bent, but a friend who loves plants, gave me some tips for saving the plant and I hoped for the best.  But after a couple of days, it became clear that the plant wasn’t going to make it.  I messaged customer service about a replacement but was told that their plant-health guarantee expires after 14 days.  I e-mailed five hours into day 15.

Missing the deadline by such an infinitesimal amount was frustrating, but hey, I’m an attorney, I know that day 15 is meaningless to a 14-day deadline, so I decided to move on.  Then, it began.

First, there was an e-mail asking me to rate my customer service experience.  I unsubscribed.  Then, there was an e-mail asking me to come back to Rooted with 10% off.  I unsubscribed again.  Then, there was an e-mail asking me how likely I was to recommend Rooted to a friend.  I unsubscribed again.  Being hounded by the company who sent you a mostly dead plant that you can’t return takes the experience from frustrating, to let’s never shop here again territory.

But, frankly, it serves me right.  I should have shopped local and headed over to Fern Plant Shop.

Long story short, if you want to order a plant, I don’t recommend Rooted.  If receiving plants through the mail is your thing, I have had nothing but great luck with Via Citrus.  To replace the other plant Kyle whacked, a new Calamondin orange tree (your house will smell amazing when it blooms) and this deep green pot to keep it in.

As another alternate plant supplier, I’ve had really great experiences with Bloomscape.com. I can’t imagine a way to pack plants more securely than the way they do, and they even include things like heating packs during colder months. I probably should note that Bloomscape is based in Michigan, and I live in Michigan, so my plants have never had to travel far, but hopefully they would still be good headed out of state.

Bloomscape typically has sales around holidays throughout the year.

I have really liked easyplant, which seems to be similar to this. My plants were in perfect shape on arrival and are going strong 6 months later (and I kill plants normally). Highly recommend.

I have also had great luck with easyplant! They sent us the incorrect size plant in our second order, but their customer service was easy to work with. They sent a replacement and let us keep the one they sent by mistake. We now have four and they have all been thriving for several months. I have never been able to keep plants alive before.

Shoe Week: One Last Summer Shoe

It’s been a fun week talking about shoes. A former co-worker texted me yesterday and asked what shoe I would buy, if I were only going to buy one shoe for summer. And, of course, I told her that I have two suggestions. Her response: “Typical.”

Shoe Week: A High Heel Alternative

Next month, I’m spending a week in Salt Lake for work. My ability to wear high heels went out with the pandemic, so what am I putting on my feet? These.
