Work From Home: A Neutral Outfit

Jan 8, 2024

Continuing with our theme from last week, I spent some time scrolling Pinterest looking for outfits that would be good for working from home.  Today’s outfit is relaxed and classic with a bit of elegance.  Because who says WFH has to be boring?

I love how this Pinterest outfit mixes light neutrals, different textures, and relaxed pieces to create a look that feels like you put a lot of effort into it, but you didn’t.  Also, even without the coat it’s a fab look.  Here’s how to recreate it.

Coat // A camel coat is a great thing to keep in your wardrobe.  It always look chic and can be dressed up or down.  This one from J.Crew is sleek and sophisticated — the red detail under the collar is great.  Don’t miss this Reiss coat at 50%-off in an after season sale.  This Avec Les Filles coat gives you age same look as the Reiss for under-$150.

Pants // Ditch the idea that you can only wear white pants in summer.  In winter, they look fresh and breezy.  I chose these fleece joggers from Target to stay warm and comfortable in my office.  For a less casual option, Athleta has these bone-colored pants with a sleek cargo styling, also in tall and petite.

Prefer a twill option?  This pair from LOFT give you that springy vibe.  They’re also on sale for $20 right now.  Plus-size? Try Athleta’s Farallon jogger.

Sweater // A textured turtleneck sweater with a slightly full collar, the inspiration sweater is fantastic.  Finding something similar was a challenge, but this Amazon sweater has the same chunky vibe.  This bobble sweater is also a great option.  If this is a piece that you would wear frequently, I recommend splurging a bit on either this cashmere Reformation sweater in a ribbed knit.

Prefer something more relaxed?  My favorite Varley sweater is the perfect choice for this look, with a voluminous collar and slightly slouchy style.

Shoes // An all white sneaker gets a boost from a simple metallic detail.  The classic Nikes are a fabulous option, and come in at a very affordable $52.

Accessories // My dream is to make partner and buy myself a Cartier Tank watch.  I know it’s not the most original choice, but I’ve adored them for years.  Plus, I’d like something heirloom quality so I can gift it to Sloane later in life.  For an inexpensive fashion watch, I found two choices: this cognac leather Fossil watch and this option from Nordstrom Rack.

Do you wear an Apple watch?  Tory Burch makes fantastic leather bands to give it a more professional vibe.  Quince also sells a <$30 option.

Obviously, the outfit needed Ray-Ban Aviators.  If you want a cooler style, these Carrera aviators with a unique shape caught my eye.

Finally, finish out the look with a clutch bag.  Now that I carry a diaper bag with me many places, I just shove a medium clutch with my items into it.  I love that this MKF bag has a ring so it will stay on your hand like a bracelet.  I also like the navy and red stripe on this foldover clutch from Verishop.

The Longines Dolcevita is similar to Cartier tank (also my dream watch). Still a splurge (it was my promotion present to myself in 2015)

I have promised myself a (gently used) Cartier Tank for my 40th Birthday or promotion to Army Colonel, whichever comes first!

In the meantime, I bought my mother, would refuse to wear a watch the price of the Cartier Tank, this classic Seiko for Chanukah: https://seikousa.com/collections/essentials/products/swr066

I personally am eyeing this Seiko: https://seikousa.com/collections/essentials/products/swr078

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
