The Find: A Fashion-Forward (Warm) Puffer

Oct 18, 2023

In 2019, I bought an Amazon Essentials puffer coat to wear on winter walks with my dog while I was in Montana.  I wasn’t expecting much.  Few coats can stand up to January in Big Sky Country.  So imagine my surprise, when I was actually warm.

Yes, in a closet that had seen Canada Goose, Helly Hansen, Columbia, and every brand Bob Ward and Sons had to offer growing up, the warmest coat to ever grace its hangers was from Amazon.  And what a coat it is (also in plus).  So I was thrilled when a friend texted to tell me that there was a fashion-forward option for girls who like to be warm and stylish.

When my friend told me about this Cropped Puffer Coat from Amazon, she confessed that she had purchased it on sale.  But my famously frugal friend was so impressed by the style, the quality and the warmth that she “would have paid full price, maybe more.”

This coat comes in sizes XS thru 6X.  Because say what you will about Amazon, they’re one of a handful of retailers who actually takes inclusive sizing seriously.  The coat also comes in eight colors, some neutral, some bright.  Personally, I like this tan color best.

Yes, the coat is made from polyester (recycled polyester to be exact), and I know some of you are down on poly as a material.  But hear me out: I have never, in my whole life, been as warm as when I am wearing this coat.  I’ve been colder indoors with the heat on, than I have been in this coat, outside on a below-zero day.  And I attribute that level of warmth to the almost comical level of polyester fill Amazon’s jackets are packed with.

Prefer a long coat?  This knee-length puffer is the kind of thing that will keep you warm on your long commute from the Metro to your office.  Add a warm, winter boot and your commuting happiness will increase three-fold.

I know that I waltz in here every winter to sell you a $75 pile of polyester with a zipper and some of you roll your eyes.  But I hate to be cold; I get it from my Mother.  That Southern lady with her tiny bones and lack of body fat is always cold.  Always.  Except when she is wearing the Amazon Essentials coat.  So whether you like it regular, cropped or long, do yourself a favor and pick one up because winter is coming.

…except “size inclusive” sizing such as Amazon’s typically excludes the doubly petite, that is those of us who are short and slim.

Haha I’m a southern lady with a lot of body fat and I am ALWAYS cold too! I bought the original one when you first recommended it but I can’t get over how puffy I look 😂 Very warm, that’s for sure! Thanks, as always, for keeping us southerners trapped in the cold … top of mind!

Puffers are so rarely stylish. This looks great for the price and has styling potential. Thanks for sharing!

Fellow Monatan here. I wore this jacket on long walks when we were in the negative 20s last winter. I also run cold and was completely comfortable!

Ok, so you were gone for a while and then I was busy for a while, but gosh I missed your breezy, sarcastic posts. And bless your momma’s skinny little heart. Glad you are keeping her warm!

So I bought the less-puffy option when you posted this last year (I don’t need below zero puff, just like in the 40’s puff), and I really like it, it’s so comfortable. It’s great for travel too, because it squishes down really small, and then puffs right back when you take it out.
