The Find: A Sunny Yellow Dress

May 8, 2023

When I started this blog in the late aughts, the rising stars of the fashion world were Philip Lim, Thakoon, and Prabal Gurung.  Fifteen years later, their pieces aren’t as coveted, but that doesn’t mean that they don’t have style.  Prabal makes a diffusion line for JCPenney, and the cute, summer dresses will have you hitting Penney’s on the way home like it’s 1992.

This sunny, yellow eyelet dress is perfect for a weekend date or a casual wedding.  It’s the kind of dress that will have you saying, “Maybe I need to wear more yellow?”

I ordered this dress and I am happy with the quality for the price.  It’s an H&M price with Nordstrom Rack quality.  The fabric has a little heft to it, which helps it keep its shape.  The sleeve elastic is a little itchy, but after a bit of lotion, wasn’t a bother.

The sizes run 2-18, and 14W-24W.  The reviews say the dress runs small, so I went from a 6 to an 8.  After seeing the dress in person, I will tell you that the reason people think it runs small is 1) if you have breasts, you will need to size up, and 2) the wide waist band is not flexible.  One size up was very comfortable (even a little loose) for me, but if you have a substantial bust, your mileage may vary.

The rest of the Prabal Gurung line is lovely too.  I also ordered this floral shirt dress for a casual Friday.  My only complaint is that I wish it was lined.  It also comes in plus size.  And since I was already ordering, I picked up this cobalt blue work blouse from JCP’s Liz Claiborne line…and it’s the rare top that is cute enough to wear solo.

I bought the yellow dress for my son’s first communion and it is AMAZING. So bright, so airy, and comfortable. Oh, and it has POCKETS. But the sizing is very wonky – I’m usually a straight 16 because of bust, but in this I needed the Plus Size 18. The straight size 18, 14W and 16W didn’t work in the chest at all. I tried on all 5 sizes between the store and shipping. The 18W fit perfectly, and was a bit loose in the wide waistband, but since I was hostess, I wanted something with a bit of give. (The dress is NOT stretchy at all.) I got so many compliments and the color is just beautiful. And for about $40-ish with many of their sale prices, it’s a steal. But, I would order a few sizes to make sure you find one that fits.

“Hitting Penney’s on the way home like it’s 1992” made me literally LOL. I’m so glad you shared this post — I would never have thought to look at Penney’s!
