The Find: A Versatile Dress for Work Travel

Mar 20, 2023

Every morning, my e-mail is filled with multiple conference invites.  In the wake of the pandemic, the conference industry has decided to lure large groups of professionals to 3.5-star hotels across America for continental breakfasts, quasi-inspirational talks, and happy hours complete with drink tickets.  And when traveling for work, it’s important to have at least one dress that looks just as good standing in line for croissants as it does holding up a high-top cocktail table.

This Maggy London dress has a cool asymmetrical neckline to give a simple sheath a boost.  The elbow sleeve and knee length make this dress wearable in a professional setting both during the day and at dinner.  Layer on a crewneck blazer for day, change into a sandal and lose the jacket for evening.

Maggy London may not be an exciting brand, but it is a brand that delivers.  When I need a simple dress, made of a heavier material that I can wear to work, dinner, or church, this is a brand I can count on.  This green, ruched-side dress is another fantastic choice for work. The lace twist dress with flutter sleeves is a great dress for dinner that has a bit of modesty.  I also like this more relaxed dress that also comes in plus-size.  Or, hit the summer color with this bright yellow frock.

Need a discount?  Maggy London’s dresses are always available at The Rack.

I love the neckline on this dress, what a find! I think I’d probably have a tailor swap the zipper for one that isn’t quite so high-contrast, though.

I found a very similar dress on Amazon that I purchased for a funeral. It was so good and I plan on wearing it again. Meant to share the find with you sooner & this post reminded me. Note, the material is thin, but not cheap in my opinion.

Oh wow. That looks very similar. Thanks for sharing. Was it TTS?

I’d say it runs a tad small. I prefer Petite XS or XS and the Small in this dress fit me fine. A tad roomy, but I liked that it just skimmed my skin vs. being tight.

I forgot to mention that so many women came up to me that day and commented on how chic I looked. Hope it works out for you!

Also love that this dress accommodates a blazer or sweater for warmth. Just got back from a conference in Florida with freezing meeting rooms. It was cold to the point of distraction. Light sweaters were no match. Next time, packing heavier weight clothes.

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
