Two Ways: Styling a Sleek Sweaterdress

Oct 17, 2022

This morning’s sweater dress is easily my favorite thing that I’ve worn since Sloane was born.  So it definitely deserves a styling post to illustrate how I’ve been wearing it.  Because I’ve only owned it three weeks, and I’ve already worn it five times. ????‍♀️

In case you missed it this morning, the dress is the Renata Rib Sweaterdress from Amazon.  It comes in three colors, and sizes XXS to 5X, though some sizes are sold out in some colors.

Left // This is my casual brunch on Sunday with the baby in the stroller look.  The dress looks great layered under a vest like this J.Crew Quilted Excursion Vest.  For something a little trendier, try this Avec Les Filled faux-leather puffer vest.  If you need something under-$50, Gap stocks a puffer vest in several chic colors.  And Athleta’s Downtown Vest comes in tall and petite.

To keep the casual vibe, I wear this look with my cool Nike Air Jordan Center Courts (which sadly only come in men’s sizes). Madden makes a similar sneaker with gold accents.  Or if you love Nikes, the Court Legacy sneaker is a classic, and it’s made with sustainable materials.  Need a wide width?  These Rockports have a gold accent.

As for styling, I added these gold hoops because I thought the shape was unique.  I would probably wear my hair up in a dry-shampoo-ponytail for this look.  And as it is a casual brunch, I wouldn’t wear much makeup, just the Cicapair and a bit of concealer, with some mascara.

Right // For my office, this is a business casual work look.  For yours, it might be considered dressed up.  But either way, it’s seriously fab, mixing a trendy blazer with basic pieces.

This plaid blazer from Ann Taylor is a cool piece for fall winter.  The colors in the plaid pair perfectly with black and ivory to give your look a bit of pop.  I also love this plaid blazer from Anthropologie with hints of rust in the pattern.  For something with more of a traditional, ladylike feel, try this Nic + Zoe collarless blazer.  Plus-size?  This long-shoulder windowpane blazer from Eloquii is a good option.

Given that it’s fall, I added black tights and a black sock boot.  My favorite black tights were discontinued, so I’m trying the Hue Blackout tights and Hanes blackout tights to see which I like best.  The bonus of these brands is that I can pick them up at Target if I put a run in them without needing to wait for shipping.  Also, I love the idea of these M&S Body Sensor tights that are supposed to keep you warm in the winter.

These sock booties from Amazon are a good substitute for the Stuart Weitzman sock boots that I adore.  If you’re skeptical about sock boots, I was too.  But I found they blend in with tights to give you a long, sleek leg line.  Not convinced?  Try these Sam Edelman high-heel tall boots instead.

To style the look, I added these amazing enamel and pearl earrings.  I like how, with the plaid blazer, their slightly larger size captures the 80s/90s trend without being overdone.  For the hair, I would wear it down and curled under.  Wearing it up might make the look feel a bit too conservative.

I would also add a deep brown/burgundy lipstick like this one from Dior.  It’s another 90s throwback to pump up the look.  Or if you’re not feeling that color, now is a great time to break out the Clinique black honey.

I love this dress, great find! And it would not occur to me to style is either way you featured here. Excellent post – as soon as that dress comes back in stock in my size I will order!

I bought this dress in brown after you first posted it. Love it so much, I’ve ordered in both of the other colors. I assume I’ll be living in them all winter.

Hoping the neckline on this dress won’t make me look too top heavy – that’s always my challenge when items have too much material up top, but fingers crossed. I love the idea of the white – and hope I can live in it via Zoom AND in person. 🙂

I now own the Air Jordan Nike Center Courts and I can’t tell you how amazing they are. They are versatile and SO comfortable. And for those of you like me that often need to put in orthodic soles, I added them to these shoes and they fit like a dream. And tons of compliments on them too – such a fun add. I’ve worn them casual and with something a bit more dressy (Assn Conference – gotta be kind to your feet…). LOVE THEM. Thanks Abra for posting these a few months back – and they’re also on sale too now, which is great. Thinking about buying a backup in case they don’t continue to make them, but once I treated them with protectant spray, they clean up like a dream too! So I may have these longer than I thought.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
