The Range: Broderie Anglaise Dresses for Summer

Jun 29, 2022

Do you ever think about clothing you used to own, but either donated, sold, or wore out?  Maybe I’m the only one with this disease.  But I do think about the pieces I loved in my younger years from time to time.

Today, I had my thoughts stolen by a Catharine Malandrino dress in black Broderie Anglaise that I owned in my mid-20s.  It was such a splurge for me at the time, and I bought it to wear to an event, and then basically wore it until the threads fell out.

So when I spotted the Sea dress below, I needed to add it to the Range.  Let’s have a look at some Broderie Anglaise and eyelet dresses for summer that aren’t white.

Recommendation: When you include a plus size option in your post, for true inclusivity, please make sure the photo of the linked plus size product is shown on a plus size model.

    • JBINDC says:

Agree with the spirit of your recommendation but clicking through to the Anthro site, there aren’t any plus size pics available

      • Belle says:

I agree with this in principle, and I do try to find brands that have plus-size models, but a lot of retailers who carry plus, don’t photograph plus-size models. I’ll be more aware of it, but sadly, this is the way some brands are going.

    • E says:

Surprised me too, but the retailer doesn’t show plus size models (which makes it oh so difficult to extrapolate how it will look, but that’s not a CHS problem IMHO). While the dress is gorgeous (and machine washable!), that open back is a no-go for me. If I can’t wear a normal bra it’s just not happening, sigh.

I didn’t know that’s what the pattern was called. Learned something! Also found the plus size photo strange, agree it isn’t the bloggers doing.

  3. SC says:

Fun fact: “Broderie anglaise” is also called “eyelet” so some retailers might use that term instead. Search both!

I am still kicking myself for trying on but not purchasing a very pretty Calvin Klein black eyelet shirtdress in 2005. What was I thinking?! I bet I would still have it! Must add one to the to-sew list…
