One Cool Thing. 300+ years ago, a Spanish galleon wrecked off the Oregon Coast. But this isn’t the plot to Goonies, it’s real.  The backstory, and the discovery.

On two occasions over the past 18-months, I promoted Shein clothing on this site.  That will not happen again.

Former Roll Call reporter Beth Brotherton wrote this piece from the American Manufacturing Association detailing how Shein is polluting our planet with fast fashions, likely created with forced labor, and exploiting a loophole to continue their immoral practices.

To give you a sense of scope, Shein is producing 1.3 million new styles per year.  Other fast fashion retailers, like H&M, produce just 25,000 in the same time period.  This means that the bulk of the styles, which often retail for less than $20 a piece, are going into the trash.

Popular with young people and on TikTok, Shein has taken over the fast fashion industry by copying designs from other retailers (even other fast fashion shops like Zara) and drastically cutting prices.  Because they ship straight from China, they can avoid US laws meant to enforce better labor practices, allowing them to make their products with forced Uighur labor and with materials harvested from locations known to employ slave labor.

This post is deeply distressing.  I encourage you not to shop at Shein, and to share this post with friends and relatives (esp. young women).  You won’t see them here again, and hopefully, Rep. Blumenauer’s efforts to close the slave-labor loophole will be successful.

That galleon story was something else, and a story I never would have come across on my own. Thanks for sharing it!

  2. Rachel says:

I’ve been making ceviche on repeat when it’s too hot to cook – this is my go-to recipe. Any firm white fish works well – I usually use rockfish. https://www.karenskitchenstories.com/2016/05/spicy-halibut-ceviche-with-casera-style.html

  3. Mary says:

Super not the point but it’s pronounced SHE-in, according to a tweet by the brand. I have never purchased from them and do not plan to change that. Thanks for the article.

    • Belle says:

See, last time I pronounced it Shein, I got corrected. Apparently, it is the Givenchy of the fast fashion world, no one can agree.

  4. EmMA says:

That onesie is really cute- but be warned, snaps are the devil! Zippers (or magnets) make allllll the difference in the middle of the night.

Signed, mom of a 5 month old who lived and learned and will never buy PJs with snaps ever again

  5. Anon says:

Thank you for the PSA about Shein! I knew they were fast fashion, but didn’t know how much worse they were than other fast fashion options. Appreciate you keeping them off the site!

    • Dee says:

      Agreed. Thank you.
I really respect and enjoy how you bring your authentic self and opinions into this site. Not just to spark discussions or comments, but to be you. Like how you don’t post sales on Veterans/Memorial Days. Very cool
      Thanks

  6. Pam says:

I’m glad you have discovered and shared the worst of Shein. Their quality is crap and their manufacturing abhorrent. They have an amazing use of AI to generate the million plus styles they churn out like textile litter. Lots of young women without a lot of money waste their money on Shein crap. Thank you for taking a stand.

Since Sloane was born, I’ve fallen hard into a black, white, and blue wardrobe. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but as spring blooms, I need a little color in my wardrobe (and probably a little print too). Here are a few tops that caught my eye for work.

Too Many Tabs: April 19, 2024

This week, I fell mindlessly into my phone more than I think I ever have. My screen time went from 3.5 hours per day to 5 hours per day. But the increased eye strain did lead to some good finds. Just going to leave this right here.  (I really need to work on “Didn’t make […]
