Monday Outfit: Welcome Back to the Office

Apr 18, 2022

Are you back in the office?  Did your boss not get the memo that “everyone” is dressing more casually now?  Yeah, mine either.

For everyone who still needs blazer, trousers, dresses, and suits, this one is for you.

Kim Le is one of the few bloggers who started out in the professional fashion space and never left.  Her closet is still a source of inspiration for many women whose closets have more blazers in them than nap dresses.

This outfit struck me as a nice bridge for those who like dark colors, but want to mix in a spring hue — like pale blue.  The same look could be achieved with navy separates and a lavender blazer, or gray separates and a yellow one.  Here’s how to build the black version.

Blazer // The jacket in the photo is a deeply discounted Hobbs piece from Yoox.  I chose it because it’s a little bit softer in composition than the tailored blazer, and I liked the foamy blue-green color.  For something closer to the inspiration piece, try this mid-price blazer from 1.State, or this Perspective suit jacket.

Looking for a full suit?  Ann Taylor has one in this light blue right now (also in petite and tall).  Plus-size?  Maree Pour Toi offers a nice option.

Trousers // The pants from Nic + Zoe are a nice option for work because they’re slim without being skinny.  They are also made with Nic + Zoe’s Wonderstretch fabric that makes them as comfortable as athleisure.  If you prefer a wider leg pant, give these trousers from Mango a try.  Plus-size?  The Nic + Zoe straight legs also come 14W to 24W.

Blouse // Being pregnant, I wanted something with a little flow.  A blouse with a loose shape that could accommodate by bump now and in two months.  This affordable Nanette Lepore top fits the bill.

If you’re looking for something more fitted, this NYDJ split neck shell is a workwear staple.  For plus size readers, this top from Avenue runs up to a 36.

Bag //  The bag in the photo is Cuyana, and is sadly discounted.  You can still find it on Poshmark.  For a similar style, I like this Matt & Nat bag, currently deeply discounted at Rack.  This vegan leather line is well made and perfect for work.

Shoes // Normally, I wouldn’t endorse any shoe color but black with this outfit, but Kim makes the suede shoes in a pale taupe work.  This pair from Marc Fisher can get you back into heels comfortably with a chunky block heel.  Want something with a lower heel height?  These Linea Paolo short heels give you a nice transition option.

Earrings // A Rachel Entwhistle pair of black and gold drops finish out this look.  I promise, if you buy these, you will wear them again and again.  I have a similar pair that catch a lot of wear in winter.  They’re a little dressier than studs, but still professional.

    I love these ideas.

Follow-up on a recent CHS rec: I ordered the dress from this post in several colors (https://caphillstyle.com/capitol/2022/03/22/the-find-a-spring-dress-for-work-or-play.html), and while it was too big up top for me (I am rather small through the bust), it is beautiful! I would highly recommend to anyone in the market for a cute dress!

Thanks for this post! Returning to the office next week and trying to dress a baby bump, too. This is a sleek look I can pull off!

  4. Diane says:

Thanks for the inspiration! Wearing basically this today with clothes I had in my closet!

It’s allegedly spring. However, for every minute of sunshine, there seems to be an hour of rain and gloom. So while I’d love to wear lighter spring pieces, it’s time to bring on the layers.

Business Casual Outfit: Linen Closet

And just like that, it’s April. Summer is almost upon us, and the retailers are filled with linen wares. Now, you know that I am usually unwilling to wear linen to work due to the wrinkles. But in this post-pandemic world, perhaps my mind can change.
