Monday Outfit: Camel and Red for Work

Jan 31, 2022

Business casual can feel like an unsolvable problem — especially at a law firm where many of the senior attorneys still wear jackets every day.  But I think this upgraded twinset outfit (yes, I said twinset) hits all the right notes.

Twinsets can feel a little fussy, but pairing a modern cardigan with a simple sweater gives you the appeal of a twinset without the stuffy Junior League vibes.  This look is modern and chic with a color palette that’s classic and a little daring.  Here’s how to recreate it.

Cardigan // My Juliette J.Crew Cardigan are some of the best pieces in my wardrobe.  This long, drapey cardigan looks great with jeans or belted over a dress.  It also flatters any figure in sizes XXS to 3X.  And is 30% off through the end of today.

Looking for a petite option?  J.Crew Factory has one.  Need a more affordable versions?  Try Chicwish.

Sweater // I bought a different style of Nordstrom’s cashmere sweater this season, and I love it.  I sometimes have an issue with wool, but the material is so high quality it’s not a problem.  So this v-neck from Nordstrom gets my endorsement for a soft, luxurious, affordable cashmere.  They have many other styles, and sizes run 00-18.

Jeans // These Toothpick jeans are my favorite.  They’re comfortable.  They light color is a little more relaxed and modern.  And I love the fit.  Size 23-32, petite and tall.

Want a different style?  I would suggest a dark bootcut.

Shoes // Obviously, these Trotters red flats are a similar style to the Sarah Flint Natalie flats that every influencer owns.  But the Trotters are much, much more comfortable.  I wish I could endorse the Sarah Flints, but mine cut up my feet and I’m hobbled by the end of the day.  After 15+ wears hoping they would improve, they are officially retired.  The Trotters are 1/3 the price and much more wearable.

Ring // Dome rings are the best.  They’re impactful but simple, and they look great with anything.  This Missoma ring has just the right amount of sparkle.  Need a thinner one?  This Daphine ring is the winner.

Any thoughts on a non ballet flat or heel that could be styled with this outfit? I love the look but my 87 year old feet don’t mesh well with my 33 year old body so heels and flats are out, possibly forever.

    • Jen says:

I am sorry for your foot woes, but I do have to say that gave me such a laugh. I read it quickly and immediately thought – “wow, an 87 year old reading a blog and staying fashionable – good for her!” and then I read the rest of your post.

Hope you find the right footwear and hoping that all of the 87 year olds who still enjoy fashion do, too! 🙂

    • Belle says:

Trotters are designed to be more supportive. But I’m not sure what you mean by a non flat or heel.

    • E says:

I’ve found that adding an insole has helped me wear flats, though I can’t always wear them as often or as long as I’d like.

Though not a red shoe, you could always go for a cute white sneaker (tons of brands, Vejas are hot and I have a pair of Calvin Kleins). I sprained my ankle earlier this year and needed to wear a sneark with my ankle brace. I found I really enjoyed pairing clean white sneakers with all my work outfits. There are tons of options and you could invest in a nice pair. Again, if needed, an insole can make them more wearable for your feet.

    • Mary says:

Would the Dansko Fawna be an option for you? My feet hurt, too.

Yikes. I’ve been reading you from the getgo on all of your sites. Pleeeeease let’s try to be supporters of women everywhere. Do we really need to make old school references to the Junior League? I would wager that a lot of your readers are members. Perhaps you are thinking of stereotypes from back in the day, but if you look at the data, most of these women are employed full time. Those who aren’t are likely full time at home mothers, another group that is too easy for women to disparage.
Networking organizations for women make us stronger and benefit communities.
Women endure enough systemic sexism. Let’s support one another and pull together. Why can’t we women see this?

    • Jenn S. says:

I’m team, “Let’s uplift each other,” but I read the Junior League comment differently – it isn’t an indictment of the organization or their work. What popped into my head was grade school teachers wearing twinsets – its just a stuffy vibe/visual, not that their work isn’t meaningful. 🙂

    • Jenny says:

I think it’s a bit of a stretch to say a twinset giving old school Junior League vibes is an attack on women.

LOVE this outfit! The Juliette sweater blazer is always perfect, I just picked up my third color last month. I would not consider jeans business casual at all, but this would fly at my DC law firm (we had a strict dress code pre-pandemic but now they’re fine with jeans in the office since many people still WFH most of the time).

Beauty Review: Bondi Boost

As I age, I notice many changes in my body. Most are fine. Some are frustrating. Like many women, I lost a lot of hair in my postpartum phase. Being anemic for more than a year after, it didn’t grow back in to its former glory. So I’ve tried any number of shampoos, pills and […]
