Happy Hour: One Last Drink

Jul 30, 2021

On August 1, I’m going sober.  This is not new ground for me.  But it’s been a while.  So this weekend, I am going to enjoy a few of my favorite brunch cocktail — the Aperol Spritz — before going dry.

If you’ve never had an Aperol Spritz, honey, you are missing out.  It’s citrusy, tart, lightly sweet, and perfect when garnished with an aggressively large slice of orange.  Gold in the Kitchen has the recipe.

I recommend the big wine glasses and wooden skewers to hang the orange slices across the top of the glass.  As Lady Mary would say: It’s important to do things properly.

J.Crew Factory has the cutest dresses right now.  I don’t know how I missed them.  But look at this adorably bright floral, and tell me you don’t want to sip a cocktail on a patio! (also in petite)

They’re also having a huge sale.  So I snapped up this blue floral dress to go with it.  Let’s soak the last bits of joy out of the summer, shall we?

Plus-size?  This Nasty Gal maxi and coral Lane Bryant caught my eye.

While I don’t know the reason behind your looming alcohol-free lifestyle, I have to tell you it will change your life, andpossibly in an amazing way. Two years ago I had to give it up cold turkey for health-related reasons. I was never a problematic drinker, and certainly not someone that had an addiction. While at first, it was tough; after a hard day at work or a stressful situation, a glass of wine was my go-to. Now I’ve learned healthier coping skills—hot baths, meditation, walking, reading, the list goes on. My health has improved, my relationships have improved, and I have lost that feeling of “oof, I said too much,” after a social event.I have also processed and healed some personal issues that I really hadn’t faced before(not alcohol related). I am not going to lie, there were a few “friends” that struggled with my lifestyle change, but that is on them, not me. It’s an eye opening experience and to be honest, I don’t miss those days—and mornings, especially—one little bit.

I too am trying a sober August. After a family vacation with lots of casual drinks over dinner, I was feeling a little ‘blah’. Trying to reset my body and hopefully improve some gut issues.

Happy Hour: Atlantic Beach Pie

There are two kinds of people in this world: People who eat cake on their birthdays and people who don’t.  And some of the weirdos in the latter category (I said what I said) eat pie as an alternative.  So if you’re a “birthday pie” eater with a late summer celebration coming up, may I […]

The Find: The Only Wire-Free Bra That Didn’t Fail Me

After Sloane was born, I developed a seething hatred for underwire bras.  The trouble was that I had also developed a larger, slightly droopier bust.  It was a cruel irony.

The 2010s Trends I’m Loving and Leaving Behind

Our tween and teen nieces spent the first half of 2023 reviving our high school fashions.  From peasant tops to low rises, I felt like I was back bopping to N’SYNC in my mint-green sedan for a minute.  Now, our 20-something direct reports are bringing back the 2010s in a big way, and I am […]
