Happy Hour: The Saturday Spritzer

Apr 16, 2021

I don’t post a lot of my own cocktail recipes in the Happy Hour post.  First off, I like sharing other people’s content because it always comes with beautiful photos and its nice to post something new each time.  And second, if I’m making a drink for myself, it’s almost always the same cocktail.  I call it the Saturday Spritzer.

I borrowed this image from the fine folks at Hy-Vee.  They have a grapefruit spritzer recipe that is pretty good, but frankly mine is better.

Spritz cocktails are a great thing to make at home because they require no tools or equipment.  All you need is 1) a sparkling wine, 2) some kind of liquer, and 3) club soda.  You can also add fruit garnishes as needed.  Here’s how I make mine.

3oz. (or two jiggers) of Prosecco

1.5oz. (or one jigger) of St. Germain Elderflower Liquer

1oz. Club Soda

Add Red Rio Grapefruit Cordial to taste.

Garnish with fresh red grapefruit slices.

I like a good amount of the grapefruit cordial in mine because this particular brand is more tart than sweet.  But someone people just like a splash.  So I would advise adding it slowly and tasting along the way.

Other spritzes and spritz-like cocktails to try at home are the Aperol Spritz, this Honey and Lemon Spritz, and the ever popular Pimm’s Cup.

I use a big wine goblet for my Saturday Spritzes.  This gives me room for fruit and ice.  And if you or someone in your household likes fancy ice, this countertop pebble ice maker is a nice addition to your kitchen appliance stash.

I will be wearing a lot of maxi dresses over the coming months.  I’ll be working from home, and my house is kind of cold in the summer, so I need something that is comfortable, a little dressy, and will keep me warm.  And all I think about when I ponder that question is jersey maxi dresses and cardigans or utility jackets.

I buy all of my maxi dresses at Amazon.  I have never found more comfortable, better quality dresses for the price than these Daily Ritual Lived In Maxis.

The material is like a broken in t-shirt.  The side vents keep the dress a comfortable temperature, even on hot days.  And they wash well without wearing out over many laundry cycles.  The sizing runs XS to XXL.

Daily Ritual has a whole line of Lived In products using this material from t-shirts to cardis and beyond.  I also like their sleeveless maxi dress and their v-neck knee-length dress.  I own $90 dresses that aren’t as nice as these <$30 dresses.

Kind of a silly question, but what do you do with the leftover sparkling wine from spritzes? I love an aperol spritz but it feels like a waste of a bottle of Prosecco to use such a small amount. Is there a secret I’m missing?

  2. Sheri says:

I was SO glad to see that Daily Ritual maxi dress come back into stock in a few colors. I just spotted it a few days ago. I have two from last summer, and just ordered the rose. I love them for all the reasons you mention for WFH, and they are nice enough to go out in. Who knows: I may even find a way to dress them up if/when I return to the office. Just a great dress.

Looks great — original content is so much better than reposting someone else’s work!

The Saturday Spritzer looks amazing, thank you for sharing! And just flagging for everyone that mini (187ml) La Marca and Lunetta proseccos are available in a lot of grocery stores and would be perfect for cocktails like this if you don’t want to open a full bottle. Lunetta is a bit drier than La Marca, if La Marca is too sweet for you.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
