The Find: The Best Baseball Caps

Mar 9, 2021

Let’s talk for a minute about baseball caps.

Pre-COVID, you would have rarely seen me in a ball cap.  Or a hat of any kind.  But post-COVID?  An essential.

Want to run to brunch without restyling?  Cap.  Headed to the gym for an HIIT workout?  Cap.  Need to run errands with no time to shower?  Cap.

The pandemic may be showing itself to the door (please, Lord), but I think baseball caps are going to remain in the rotation for me.  Here are a few of my favorites.

Normally, I would be anti-trucker hat.  But I am a longtime DU supporter, and Filson is a hot brand right now.  So I welcome this hat to my sanity walk wardrobe.

If you want a lighter color, I love this Ripcurl Hat in light oatmeal.

American Needle has a lot of fun, embroidered hats for under-$20.  So if you’re looking for something with spice, give them a look.

This basic cap is one that I wear often.  It’s under-$10, and it wears and washes well, making it perfect for sweaty workouts.

This has been my go to: https://www.oiselle.com/collections/hats/products/puffy-bird-hat

The little bit of quilting is perfect for warmth during a chilly NorCal winter.

Obviously, I don’t know you on a personal level but being a 10+ year reader makes me go, “Who are you?!” with this post. Playfully, of course – the pandemic has changed all of us.

Do you have any styling tips? I’m weirdly, “afraid,” of hats – just got my first sun hat last year!

Next time I wear one, I’ll post a photo. I think the key is to just go all in. It should coordinate with the outfit in some way — color or style — but most of it is attitude.

+1 to hats being all about attitude and practice. There’s a hat for everybody, and pretty much anybody can pull off a baseball hat. I’ve got a hat wardrobe (baseball hats, straw hats, felt fedoras, sun hats, church lady hats, fascinators….), which sadly due to COVID hasn’t seen as much use lately, but I treat them just like any other accessory. Like Belle said, pick one with a color or style connection and just go with it. Hats also keep the sun out of your eyes and your scalp from burning, so beauty + function = win.

I like a ball cap for exactly the reasons you mention and I discovered something about truckers hats in my search for my perfect one. Did you know there are three different profiles in hats? The classic high profile trucker hat is a tough one to pull off, unless as you say you’re really going “all in” on that look. But a nice mid-profile trucker hat has those vibes but on an everyday wear level. A lot of hats will list the profile in the description so it’s easy to weed out a look you aren’t going for. I have three of the same men’s PrAna trucker hat in a cool blue medly, dark olive and black. I figure that covers all my outfit bases.

The light color one is lovely!

My problem right now is that I’m already wearing a face mask, so I feel like I need to either pick a hat or sunglasses, not both. If I wear all three there’s no face left!
