Two Ways: It’s Time to Wear Jeans Again

Mar 8, 2021

Ladies, I know that only five of you are probably wearing denim right now.  Because when the world’s upside down, who doesn’t want a stretchy waist band?  The trouble is, that when you go to put the jeans back on…let’s just say some things will have moved around and you will be uncomfortable.

So do your post-pandemic self a favor and put the jeans on now.  Then, you can decide whether you want to tone things up or take your time and buy a bigger size before it’s time to go out again.

The Jeans // These distressed J.Crew boyfriend jeans are perfectly relaxed.  Not loving the distressed look?  Try these Kut from the Kloth boyfriend jeans.  Plus-size?  Kut from the Kloth also has you covered.

On the Left // Sweater blazers are a godsend right now.  They look great on a Zoom call or in the office, and they’re comfortable.  This sweater blazer from J.Crew is a new style.  It’s shrunken, and slimmer than their other sweater blazers, so it looks more like a tradition blazer.  And, because it’s J.Crew, it’s available in plus-size as well.

Layered underneath the sweater is a cashmere t-shirt.  It’s a modern take on the old school twinset.  Not for you?  Try a basic white tee or a graphic tee (Old Navy has a bunch.).

I wanted to choose a dressier shoe because I want to lift the boyfriend jean.  These Ann Taylor block heel slingbacks are awesome.  If you want something more relaxed, try these cool snakeskin and gold sneakers.  They’re a lot of fun.

I wanted to add a bit of color to this neutral ensemble, so I chose these red enamel earrings from AT.  They’re showstoppers.  Prefer a more subtle look, these enamel hoops from Off 5th are awesome.

For the hair, I would wear it down in whichever style makes you feel the best.  With a subtle outfit, a little something extra with the hair always helps.  For the makeup, I added these sheer Fresh lip color in Icon.

On the Right // Layering a tonal sweater over a comfortable sweatshirt is a great look for work from home.  It’s casual, comfortable, and still looks great on Zoom.  And when this is all over, it’ll still be fresh.

This cardigan from Express has an amazing texture.  The wide stitching gives is very stylish, giving you a chic basic at an incredible price.  It’s the perfect throw-on.

I layered the cardigan over an olive sweatshirt from Banana Republic, which has the best sweatshirts right now.  Soft, cozy, and effortlessly stylish.  And the sizing runs up from XS to XXL.

Slippers are all I wear at home.  These are my go-to, but these fluffy, faux fur ones from Rachel Parcell are fun too.

Lastly, I chose a fun pendant to jazz up the look.  The little bee is so sweet.  This hummingbird pendant also caught my eye.  And I adore this <$30 wishbone pendant (for a little luck).

Must be reading minds over here! This morning I put on my ‘normal times’ Paige jeans and Madewell loafer mules because my oversized tee and hoodie outfits had been messing with my self-image. I’ve been lifting weights again and the scale is going UP and I need to check myself before I sabotage myself – this is normal. Did I change in to joggers and sandals after a few hours? Um yeah. Because I’m carrying my mobility challenged dog around and not living that office life yet. But it did feel good to dress, and see that yeah I’ve got some extra pounds in some places I didn’t before (hello thighs), but it’s not the end of the world.

Also, LOVE the outfit on the right. Olive is such a nice transitional season color.

So excited about denim that isn’t skinny!

  3. sara says:

If anyone is looking for a stretchy jean that’s forgiving when you’ve gained a few lbs (or more than a few, like me), I’ve been wearing the Curvy Stovetop from Madewell and it’s fit me for the past year.

That cardigan from Express looks like something I need to snap up!

  4. Emma says:

I like the vintage straight jeans from J. Crew. I can get away with the dark wash at work and like the lighter wash for weekend. They’re sized similarly to a boyfriend cut. They are slouchy, in a good way at my baseline weight but have definitely been quite fitted at times during the last year. I would love to see a review of the Le One skinny jean by FRAME. I would love to have a skinny Jean replacement for boot season next year.

  5. Kathryn M Stack says:

I bought Frame’s one size denim and it’s changed my life. Fits well, is comfortable, and looks great (I got the black). My weight fluctuates by 10 lbs pretty regularly, so in the past I’ve had multiple pairs on the same pant (one in 26, one in 27). These will definitely simplify my wardrobe AND keep my from stressing over fluctuations in weight.

I have been thinking about trying this for Saw It On Social! Which one did you buy? I’m at the top of the small size and bottom of the large, so I think I need the smaller one, but I don’t know.

  6. Jenn S. says:

I’ve been wearing jeans for the past 2 weeks or so to get me used to them again.

    Grumble.

The dresses are easier to wear. But I suspect I’ll have to get up and get, “all the way,” ready before I know it (still no word on my workplace) so I’m trying to not have to completely rip the band-aid.

  7. michelle says:

I say ditch the jeans permanently if you can!

I haven’t worn jeans in about 8 years and rarely did before because as an adult I’ve never been able to find a pair of jeans that didn’t gap at the waist while still fitting my athletic legs, and I’ve yet to find a comfortable material that weren’t jeggings.

If I have to look nice in pants I just wear my favorite pair of stretchy cuffed pants in black, this gorgeous wine color, or my pair that are printed to look like jeans.

The Find: Shirts That Don’t Gape

I remember when Rochelle Behrens launched The Shirt — a button-down blouse with anti-gape technology (a patented internal button that keeps the look smooth). The idea seemed brilliant, but at the time, my bust didn’t require an extra button. One baby later, I understand the need for some extra security.
