The high temperature in Montana today? -5 degrees. Tomorrow’s high temperature? -13 degrees. (That sound you hear is the muffled cries of the people who moved to Montana during the pandemic having never visited before.) And surprisingly, this is actually a warm-ish winter.
How do you stay warm in these conditions: You don’t. You stay alive. And when you need to wear professional attire to work, every little bit of warmth helps.
Falke are my go-to tights right now. I like that they use actual sizes and not the A-B-C formula that leaves many of us in between sizes. They have two styles that I love.
The first, the Warm Deluxe tights are made with a plush, velvety fabric that helps keep you warm. And they’re 80-denier, so they’re pretty dark. The second are the 100 denier tights which have a nice thickness for cold weather. I wear them with skirts or under pants, and I love how dark and thick they are.
Sold out in your size? Bloomingdale’s still has sizes of the 100 denier tights in stock.

I still like the Commando ultimate opaque tights best for warmth and comfort in cold months. I think I read about them here originally. They have the S/M/L size options. I have found there is a big jump between the sizes, so if you don’t find your size I would not try to “make do” with a bigger size – super saggy! I have found that my black pairs have lasted for years with minimal wear and tear, but when I purchased a grey pair they seemed to be a slightly different fabric and they got a small hole my first or second time wearing them.
You should check out Uniqlo’s HeatTech collection. It is amazing and works for both casual and professional looks!
The fleece-lined Altitude Tight from Athleta has been my go-to. Definitely less of a work-attire pant if you’re in a very professional office like you, Abra, but I think with a long tunic top or longer chunky sweater it would be absolutely fine for a more business-casual office.
Athleta usually sells out of these every year EARLY, around October, but I’ve had luck checking back now and then when I need a new pair or on Ebay/Poshmark for my size. And I also wear them under snow pants while skiing.
I wear the fleece lined tights from hue or Uniqlo heat tech leggings under lined, wool skirts with otk boots as my winter work uniform. Nyc so not as cold as Montana, but lots of time outside, weather be damned.
I’ll be ordering these! brrrrrr
