The Find: A Coat on Repeat

Feb 4, 2021

My Mom was born and raised in the South.  She hates being cold.  But living in Montana, she’s been cold for forty years.

Recently, I convinced her to buy the Amazon Essentials puffer that I have talked about on this blog once before.  She wasn’t convinced at first, as a large, puffy jacket wasn’t her style, but the second she put it on, she was sold.  Over the course of the week she’s owned the coat, I’ve received no fewer than five text messages telling me how nice it is to finally have a warm coat after four decades of fruitless searching.

Yes, the coat is that good.

The Amazon Essentials Heavy Puffer is warmer than my very pricey Canada Goose coat.  It’s warmer than my Mom’s expensive Patagonia coat.  It’s warmer than any coat either of us have ever owned in our lives, and we live in Montana, so we know coats.

I now own this coat in two colors.  My Mom is about to own it in two colors.  It is the perfect chilly morning coat for dog walking or getting the mail.

As for sizing, I’m a size 6, and I wear a S.  And there’s still plenty of room to wear a sweater underneath.

If you don’t need to be bundled up like an Eskimo on an ice floe, Amazon also has a selection of affordable puffers in lighter weights.

I love that you’ve recommended this coat so consistently! It’s feeling Free People ottoman sweater-levels of consistent recommendation, which means I’m about one inch away from buying it <3

  2. Carissa Holmes says:

Bought it after your recommendation and I truly love it! I got it in white, which was probably dumb, but it’s so cute and warm I don’t care!

  3. TheLOOP says:

Do they have a longer, knee or calf length version in the heavy-weight? I have accepted that I can no longer fit in my trusty Lands End heavy parka so on the hunt to replace it.

  4. EMM says:

Do you know if there’s a men’s version of this coat? My husband has been itching for a Canada Goose and complains about the cold – this seems like the perfect interim solution, if only it were in a male version!

  5. D says:

Here to add that the Amazon essentials line includes some really great fleece sweatshirt options that come in a ton of colors and styles and are really affordable. They hold up better in the wash than pervious ones I’ve had from Columbia, et al. And the price is right so if they get so beat up by spring I won’t care!

  6. Kris says:

I purchased this coat on your recommendation and LOVE IT! It has fleece lining (including the pockets!) and it quickly became my favorite winter coat. I went with the white one but am thinking about also buying the black one as well. Highly recommend!

  7. KS says:

On your recommendation, I bought this coat first in a S, which was too tight for me in the midsection, and then exchanged for a M, which was huge all around, especially in the arms (the inside liner thing came down well below my fingers). I wanted to love it but just couldn’t get the sizing right. For anyone else thinking about ordering – I’m 5’5″ 135. I ordered in red so maybe the sizing varies a bit by color? The red was beautiful though – nice and bright. Hope it works for others!

  8. Grace Hoy says:

How do you keep the bottom half of your body warm? I’ve been thinking my next coat would be an ankle-length purchase but if this is warmer than Canada Goose, I’m sold! But, again, what about cold legs?!

    • jo says:

I’m curious as to this point as well – I guess I just don’t see the advantage to buying a short, heavy jacket. When am I going to be cold enough to want a super warm top layer and no layer from the hips down? Do other people’s legs just not get cold? If so, teach me your ways!

    • NEENS says:

I love the UNIQLO heattech leggings as a base layer!

      • M says:

Yes! They are thin but very warm. I put them under jeans and dress pants easily. Uniqlo sizing runs a bit small for me- size 12 in most bottoms and I needed an XL in Uniqlo.

    • K says:

Uniqlo heat leggings under pants are the way to go. I have a 20 minute walk outside to work (each way) and that’s what I do. Even normal leggings under a pair of pants will usually be enough as it’s been under 20 degrees here this entire winter.

  9. ERika says:

Another bought it/loved it comment here. Personally, I found the pockets were a bit on the small side (I have the XL), but for price/warmth/etc 100% worth it and recommended. Agreed that I wish they made a longer version. Definitely a good find!

  10. Eileen says:

If you could use your influencer powers to convince Amazon to make a longer version of this coat, I would be eternally grateful.

  11. KA says:

I bought this coat in black per your recommendation and also love it so much! It is now my go-to coat and has been great for surviving outdoor dining in NYC.

  12. Tiffany says:

Ordered! I have been on the hunt for a new jacket and was looking at Aritzia – your endorsement for warmth is exactly what I’m looking for! I can’t wait!

  13. Melissa says:

I got both a jacket and vest in their lighter weight styles since I don’t need quite so much warmth. The fabric is a little shiny, but for outwear for walks/exercise, it’s perfect. Warm enough and easy to wash/dry. The yellow vest is especially a favorite, and the color doesn’t feel like such a risk given the price.

  14. Jeff says:

Just ordered the Amazon Essentials Heavy Puffer for my mom, hopefully, she’ll like it.
