Best Picks of 2020: A Sweater Blazer

Dec 18, 2020

Coatigans and sweater blazers have become my go tos for work from home.  They’re more comfortable and easier to wear.  And when I’m back in the office, I can still wear them.

This sweater blazer from Banana Republic looks like a blazer on a Zoom call, but it is much more comfortable to wear.  It drapes beautifully, and the material is really lovely.  I can layer it over a t-shirt and leggings or over a work dress without issue.

J.Crew also makes a popular sweater blazer (also in plus).  They also have their long Juliette cardigan jacket, which has a truly elegant look to it.  Ann Taylor also makes their Hutton blazer in a sweater knit.

Plus-size?  Try this blazer from Eloquii.

I agree on this one! I ended up buying it in two colors.

Hello– How did you find the length on this? The website says “cropped” although it looks normal/hip-length. I have a long torso so length is always a concern. Thanks!

  2. Susan says:

So Abra, I saw your article link on IG about the new work wear rules post COVID and it mentioned the sweater blazer. It was behind a pay wall so I couldn’t read it; do you foresee the end of the traditional stiff work wear as I presume the article discussed? I haven’t pulled the trigger on a sweater blazer as I wondered if it was a short lived trend, would love to hear your thoughts!

    • Belle says:

I think you’ll see some changes. I think it depends on where you work. You might be able to wear a sweater blazer every day, or it might just be a Friday thing. There’s no way to know until we start going back to the office.

    • Kay says:

Here’s my experience from the post-Covid future! I work for the federal government in China so life has pretty much normalized. I was in a suite only office for both and women. It’s definitely been more relaxed (Americans never stopped coming into the office, local staff started this summer). Now there’s a span of everything from jeans to business casual to suit wear when people have meetings. I think once casual wear became acceptable in the office, it was hard to turn the clock back….and now everyone’s just used to seeing it so nobody stands out if they’re not in a suit anymore.

      • Jess says:

How do you feel about it though? I am very affected by the clothes I wear, and so I am trying to wrap my head around the vast majority of people going casual. I can’t wear athleisure for more than a day or two because I swear it leads me to feeling more depressed/grumpy/in a bad mood.

      • Belle says:

Interesting. I think I’m stuck in suits regardless, but we’ll see.

      • Kay says:

Maybe full span wasn’t totally accurate. There’s definitely jeans and a fleece. And leggings and the free people ottoman sweater combo. We don’t see leggings and a fleece combined though. And no hoodies. I personally prefer it. I spend a lot of time writing for my job in a windowless cave and doing that in a suit was always really uncomfortable. Obviously if I’m going out to a meeting or to the ambassador/deputy office, I’d put on a suit and jacket but I just keep them in my office now.

  3. J says:

I have 3 of the JCrew Factory sweater blazers, and love them. 2 of the regular ones and one of the longer, open ones. The material is thick and falls very nicely. I also like on the regular ones how the notch collar stands a bit but isn’t tall. It is cut very well. An unusually high quality Factory item.

    • MADELIN says:

I agree! I have 3 of the longer J Crew Factory blazers/ sweaters and think they are incredibly high quality for the price. And I like the fact that they don’t have wool, unlike the regular JCrew one.

    Nice

The Find: A Striped Tee

Without question, the most worn item in my wardrobe is a black-and-white striped tee. I wear it in winter under sweaters, in spring with white jeans, in summer with black shorts. I’ve been wearing the same one for years (it’s the best). But they don’t make it anymore. So here are some options for replacement.
