The Find: A Black-and-White Work Dress

Dec 1, 2020

To simplify my wardrobe for the upcoming legislative session, I have decided to go all white and black.  No navy.  No grey.  No browns of any kind.  All of my foundation pieces will be black and white, no exceptions.  And this dress from Adrianna Papell, coming in at under-$75, fits in perfectly.

This Adrianna Papell dress looks lovely on its own, but its also a great foundation for layering.  The dress is a faux-wrap with a tulip skirt.  It’s made of a mid-weight crepe that drapes well and flatters the body.

Want to layer it?  I recommend a simple v-neck cardigan; I like this white one from Express with balloon sleeves. You could also just add a crewneck sweater over the top of it and wear the dress like a skirt.  Prefer a blazer?  This is a good opportunity to work in some color with this spruce-colored J.Crew blazer.

You’ve just described my regular work wardrobe, with the addition of gray. I don’t do a capsule, but I find it easier to only have pieces that all coordinate, even if I have quite a few of them!
Would you be willing to share what your pared-down wardrobe for the legislative session contains before or after the session?

    • Amy says:

Same! I have one set of clothes with grey as a base, and one set with black/white as a base (I have given in to the necessity of black tights in winter, and prefer to do the shoes/tights as my black base vs. matching tights to shoes).

I second the interest for a tour of your legislative session wardrobe, if you’re up for sharing it!

  3. E says:

You mentioned that the dress is under $75, but the link shows the price as $127 🙁

  4. CIndi says:

I hope you will do a post about all your core pieces together – I’m interested to see what you come up with!

  5. Jo says:

Agree with other commenters – would love to see your core / legislative wardrobe!

The Beauty Edit: Neck Creams

Nora Ephron was right: I feel bad about my neck. As I move through my forties, the creases have turned into chasms. The skin sags like a pair of sweatpants with aging elastic. It’s not great. But it’s just a natural part of getting older. Over the past year, it feels like I’ve tried every […]
